Hairdressers - do you mind if clients read instead of chatting

I had a recent conversation with a friend about hair appointments. One of us reads a book/magazine while having our hair done. The other thinks this isn't polite.

Interested in views from hairdresser please!

I don't see how it can be considered impolite. I'm paying for a haircut, not a therapy session. As long you discuss what's required hair-wise and answer any hair related questions, read away.

It used to be standard practice to offer magazines to hair clients. Most people use their smart phones now so less necessary.

Surely reading puts your head in the wrong position? The only time I've seen anyone reading is when they are waiting for their colour to develop. I'm not a hairdresser BTW. Even if I don't feel like chatting I watch what they are doing and generally interact a bit. To be honest I think it would seem a bit rude, like messing with your phone when you are at a table with someone.

No, we don't mind at all.
Sometimes it's actually nice to have a break from the small talk! I'd rather you read than force conversation about the same things I've been talking about all day!
It's not rude. Many salons are actually promoting the fact you don't need to be social, some have options to request quiet services.
My friend does my hair and I don't like to chat. Whenever it is my turn in the chair I just like to switch off and enjoy it being all about me, I don't want to chat or gossip, being a Mum to toddlers it's the only time I ever get to sit in peace!

I get fed up with (sometimes) quite nosy questions.

“Doing anything special tonight?”

Sometimes I give a brief reply then turn it around and ask “How about you?”

Works a treat. It’s only innocent chat but I’m not always in the mood to share stuff so I don’t. I’m sure hairdressers are used to monosyllabic customers and don’t think anything of it.

I read! I have a quick chat about what I want and then get out my book...it's my only real 'down time' in an otherwise hectic schedule and the only time I really get to have a good read, so I do 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I turn it around too and then they tell me all about their holidays, family etc and it turns into a proper chat instead of just small talk.

Me too! I thought that was how conversations were meant to work…

I actually changed hairdressers because mine kept telling me all about her gynaecology and relationship problems.

Don’t wanna know. Just want slightly shorter hair.

Thank you for your insight as a hairdresser.

It seems hairdressers are in short supply on mumsnet!

I prefer to read but the hairdresser will talk to me even when I’m sitting there with my kindle open. She’s really nice but it’s quite annoying!

It is much easier to buy a hairdressing set and do it at home. Such an excellent investment. Done in minutes but my hair is naturally curly so can hide any amateur look lol. £12.99 Ebay!
