Exhilarating thread about a rolled mattress…

Yes I know, a dangerous, yet thrilling, topic for a Saturday night, but there we are.

Is there such a thing as a rolled mattress (that is delivered rolled up in a box) that can then also be rolled up and moved like that in future? Or is it more once you’ve unrolled it, that’s it, normal and heavy to lift and move forever more?

I mean a full, firm mattress rather than a topper (no matter how deep/sturdy). I would say ‘money no object’ except it’s not true, so there’s that too.

If this is too boring for MN chat on a Saturday I’ll happily inject some drama by giving the back story…. DD moving into a student let for this coming year only and will be moving in to a different student let next academic year and would want to take the mattress with her. Amongst other things that are wrong, the bed is broken (snapped slats) which the agent has said they will repair (at their own pace obvs 🙄) but the mattress is appalling and dips badly the middle. Agent has said Landlord disagrees and it’s totally fine (it isn’t) so picking our battles, I’m thinking we just get DD a new mattress and plonk on top of the rubbish mattress. But then we’d need to somehow move it next year to new accommodation and preferably for the least amount of money possible. Man with a van seems like an unnecessary expense if there’s some sort of decent mattress that could be transported easily. Any ideas?

I would buy a cheap new mattress that can be left behind when she moves on. Even a cheap mattress should be good enough for a year.

Once it’s released it’s released!

And in the joys of capitalism, someone even sells a product for it, removing the need to somehow repurpose a vacuum bag seal and make it air tight which I thought was likely to be the nightmare part.

We have recently changed my DS's bed from single to double and have used a vacuum storage bag to shrink down the memory foam single mattress then wrapped a ratchet strap round it to keep it tight so it can be stored in the loft. It now looks like one of the rolled ones that get delivered, it was only 2 years old and would have been a waste to get rid of it.

I’d look at rollable toppers rather than fill
mattress - there’s loads in the market , dormeo do some

Surely you are describing a futon?

Helenahandkart · 29/07/2023 22:30

I recently bought a vacuum bag from eBay for our spare room mattress. It was really easy to use and I was able to roll the mattress up once it had been shrunk. It takes up way less space now. The bag seems like it might not be all that robust, so probably wouldn’t survive multiple house moves.

Oh wow, thanks everyone, brilliant ideas - maybe memory foam and vacuum packing is the way to go! Seems like a plan!

NannyGythaOgg you’d think, but the landlord won’t let us remove the (shit, broken) mattress and if we leave a new one there, will charge us for removal - already asked. This is the least of the problems with the property though tbh, just trying to get DD - who has joint problems - a decent nights sleep.
