Airbnb - do you actually expect/get the "breakfast" part?

Bit random, but was musing this today as am booking one.

I have used the site a few times and never had the breakfast part of it. Tbh I haven't expected it but should I?

If you are an Airbnb owner, do you provide cereals/breast etc?

I think it depends if you are staying in someone’s spare room you do often get breakfast even if it’s just a shelf in the fridge to help yourself to in the morning. I am happy with some toast/ coffee. I do ask before arrival and can always bring travel kettle, coffee sachet and a breakfast bar.

If it’s a self contained holiday cottage I wouldn’t expect breakfast.

OldHouseLover · 29/07/2023 10:55

Great question!
We've only used Airb&b once..last year we were staying in a European city for a month & it was the best option for the location we needed.

It was a large apartment & in an ideal location for us so ticked all the boxes.

There was very little provided at all - never mind breakfast!

It would have been nice if they'd left a pack of coffee capsules beside the machine until we had a chance to figure out where to buy them. Or a small pack of washing detergent for the machine..

On the surface it looked v clean & tidy but hygiene wasn't great when you looked a bit deeper. We def left it cleaner than we found it.

I wouldn't really be bothered with Airb&b again to be honest unless in exceptional circumstances like that one where we needed it for a full month

It will be interesting to hear if anyone at all got breakfast!

WimbledonPimms · 29/07/2023 11:23

I wouldn't expect the bed to be an air bed either so would be surprised to receive breakfast. I think they've moved a long way from their original marketing idea.

minipie · 29/07/2023 11:25

I think it’s quite clear on the listing whether breakfast is included, usually it’s not.

Ok maybe the name AirBnB is out of date- it started as air beds on the floor (hence air), definitely not that any more! But it’s a big brand name, not going to change.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 29/07/2023 11:28

Depends
Stayed in one last week, cereal, bread, milk, butter, tea and coffee provided - nice surprise

OldHouseLover · 29/07/2023 11:28

Ahh..never having used them before I did wonder what the 'air' bit was all about! Makes sense now

I'm still nor sure I like it as a model & I personally wouldn't be rushing to book another one.

TenOhSeven · 29/07/2023 11:29

I always wondered how it got its name, didn't click it was from air bed. Doh!

I've only used it once, 10 years ago in the US. The owner left orange juice and bread and butter to make toast, enough for the first couple of days (stayed for a week).

AirBNB element is a brand name which provides a booking service with actual services provided by individuals

Services included are provided in the listings, so I wouldn’t expect breakfast unless stated in the listing

Ive had two stays so far, the first was a flat which had coffee & tea etc provided, with a few options and the fridge had jam, ice cream and ice.
I assume that most of this was leftovers from previous guests
The second was a family home with one bedroom locked up (presumably personal belongings stashed as they left)
A fresh loaf of bread was baked for us, a stash of biscuits, snacks & fruit - plus access to fridge & freezer food. The instructions allowed for eating anything but if a lot was consumed or things were finished to either replace or leave a donation
There was no one around for either of those bookings - but available on AirBnB messaging for any issues

My upcoming booking is a garden annex, and the host will be home. Instructions don’t refer to any breakfast etc, but does have cups & biscuits in one of the photos

As these trips are for events we are usually early departers each morning so don’t expect breakfast - at hotels we are normally leaving before breakfast and will get coffee on the way (our chief booker plans accommodation around morning Costa, dinner options and evening shops)
AirBnBs can work out cheaper overall and gives access to kitchens etc so we can self cater to meet our timings

We've stayed in over 15 and found the listing advert to be pretty accurate in whether they provide it or not. I'd say for us, only a few have and it's usually been some water, tea/coffee and croissants/muffins.

cocksstrideintheevening · 29/07/2023 12:16

I wouldn't expect breakfast in any self catering accommodation

bellac11 · 29/07/2023 12:22

I dont expect it but often there is milk, croissants, jams, some cereals left

One woman left home made jam and home made butter, it was fantastic.

We only book self catering so dont expect it but obviously dont mind it!!

1993GoToo · 29/07/2023 12:27

Just realised my OP says "breast" not bread! That is a completely different type of accommodation... 😂

Thanks for the replies!

A real cross-section of answers.

Very jealous of the fresh bread you got and the gooey brownie @tommika ! Thanks for the pictures too.

I only found out when googling that it started from "air bed" in a spare room too.

…. The photo limit wouldn’t allow me enough pictures for the bread …

Quite a different experience than breast…… I’m not too sure about the concept of cereal & breast

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/07/2023 12:44

Hugely variable. I love the ones that leave a few tea bags, sachets of coffee, maybe UHT milk and a few biscuits - suitable for most people, useful, non-perishable. Over the years I've had:

  • nothing x5/6
  • whatever previous guests left (no thanks!)
  • Tea, coffee, sugar, oil x2/3
  • a bottle of prosecco plus tea and coffee (new listing, he wanted a good review)
  • a four pint bottle of semi-skimmed milk, a bottle of white wine and a pack of biscuits

I think if you are advertising somewhere with a coffee machine, dishwasher etc, then a few of the pods needed to actually use the thing are fair.

Orangello · 29/07/2023 13:38

No, I don't expect breakfast unless this is specifically advertised. We've had it once where the AirBnB was a farm stay with 3-4 rooms. But we otherwise only book separate villas, so would not expect the host to show up and start cooking.

Riapia · 29/07/2023 13:48

Why would you have any right to expect a bed in an air bnb if no breakfast.
😉😁😁😁

did you leave a review to this effect?

what were the reviews like before you booked?

exactly

it is to really bizarre

HerbalTeaAndCake · 03/01/2024 08:30

You used to. Some places still do. But they'd say if they do or dont I guess.

you used to if they stipulated as such

as is the case now

Waitingfordoggo · 03/01/2024 08:53

We used to do Airbnb with our spare room. I provided cereals, pastries, bread (and jam, honey Marmite etc), tea, coffee and fruit juice. We had an older Spanish couple staying once and for them I provided cold meats and cheeses in addition to the other options. We used to get great reviews!

StillWantingADog · 03/01/2024 08:55

I’d never expect breakfast though I’m sure a few will do it

it’s a food point that the brand name is misleading, though it’s such a big name now though that “Airbnb” is virtually in the dictionary itself - everyone know what it means

FortunataTagnips · 03/01/2024 08:56

I wouldn’t expect breakfast. I think “BnB” in this case relates to the American concept of B&B, which is a self-catering apartment.

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/01/2024 09:04

In the last place I stayed there was freshly baked bread, butter, juice, milk and some coffee pods.

One a couple of years ago did similar but with shop bought bread and amazing eggs (farm stay).

MrsAlgernon · 03/01/2024 09:18

If self-contained property with kitchen, then
no breakfast, but I would definitely expect some basics like salt, pepper, oil in the kitchen. Who wants to buy a bottle of oil on their holiday! Tea bags, sugar, coffee pods if there's a coffee machine.

Only at one property the host did fill fridge with some food, fruits, chocolates, many various cold fizzy drinks and plenty of bottled water (in a hot country)

As family we used private room within host's house only once and oh boy they did feed us hotel-like breakfast generously, but that was in the description (and of course mentioned by many reviewers)
