Have a boat trip on the sea coming up. I get really bad motion sickness

any recommendations? Amazon have patches that I haven’t seen before but have good reviews, has anyone used them?

Get the acupuncture wrist bands - they are really good. If anyone suggests medication you can use these alongside.

I get very travel sick and use the Amazon patches, they work!

The wrist bands are great. Many sickness tablets make you very drowsy as they are old style antihistamines, so bear that in mind if you have to be compos mentis at the end and especially if you need to drive.

I've also heard that the following can help:

Lying "Perfectly Flat" (although that was from a 1930s book!).

Staying as close to the middle of the boat as possible - the outermost part of the ships will experience the most turbulence (this works for me on those dreadful tilting trains.

Stugeron tablets are amazing. You have to take them two hours before travelling, but they are non drowsy and work brilliantly.

Dombasle · 30/07/2023 06:15

I second the wristbands.

IFeelSoSoSad · 30/07/2023 07:17

We use Sturgeron tablets, but they can cause drowsiness as the active ingredient is Cinnarizine. They were effective, but I wouldn’t drive whilst using them.

Kwells are fantastic. Only take 15 mins to work and last 6 hours. I always have a pack for coach, boat and long car trips.

OK - here’s the truth. If you are really a sufferer from motion sickness none of these remedies will really help. I am someone who gets seasick crossing the channel so I know. They may help a bit but basically I refuse point blank to do a sea voyage. I should also add that I went to Antarctica at the beginning of the year (life time dream) and despite taking what the GP prescribed (which turned out to be Stugeron) and buying other stuff on board the ship, I spent a day each way in bed unable to move.

Absolutely this!

I had seasickness on tour of greek islands and the chemists there gave me Emecalm syrup which worked. Can't seem to get in uk but maybe other European countries.

Ah lovely, best of luck

In addition to OTC/prescribed remedies (which have to be taken in good time), ginger is helpful. Mint is also soothing.

What is critical is being above deck if possible, eyes on the horizon, not downwind of the engine, and as PP says the middle of the vessel is more stable. Take appropriate clothing in case it's cold/windy/raining. Going in and lying down/closing eyes is a recipe for disaster.
Avoid greasy food, alcohol and caffeine.

Phenergan tablets

I used to swear by queezibics ginger biscuits, which I first found on a ferry.

They were AMAZING. I get motion sick on almost anything and these were incredible.

Then they stopped making them. Queezibics - come back, pls!

I know take ginger shots from M&S or online. They are pretty good.

Just checked Amazon for ginger tablets... these have excellent reviews;

Sea-Band Nausea Relief Ginger Capsules for Travel Sickness Relief, 25 g, 20 Capsules amzn.eu/d/bpgsOkD

Nothing works for me either. Nothing really stops that hideous feeling.
I take sturgeon but only because they make me drowsy and I can try and sleep through a trip.
On a boat, forget it. I just don't go.

I always use Stugeron. We've been on 4 cruises, and started taking them the morning we left home. One a day until we got home, and no problems. (Including crossing the Bay of Biscay, which can be nasty)
