Is this a scam? Please help I’m going crazy

Sorry if this is in the wrong place!
Im going crazy, every single day I’m getting multiple texts with verification codes that I did not ask for. It’s not a case that someone’s trying to hack my accounts, because they’re for websites and apps that I don’t even use/some I’ve never even heard of!
It almost caused a fight last night because I got one from Hinge and my boyfriend saw and was not too happy! I can’t see anything helpful on google.
I’ve been blocking the numbers but more just keep on coming and I don’t know how to stop it, can anyone help 😭😭

Do the texts contain any links (i.e. that might be malicious)?

greenteaandmarshmallows · 28/07/2023 20:22

Someone's put your number in on their banking app thing

Maybetom · 28/07/2023 20:23

No that’s what I don’t understand; no links, nothing for me to do literally just verification codes??
I can’t figure out how it could be a scam, but can’t understand why else I’m getting three texts a day!

There are scams where the scammers ring up and ask for the code (pretending they put your number in by mistake) but you're not being contacted by anyone, and this scam wouldn't involve sending multiple messages - it's puzzling me, too.

I had a code from PayPal the other day that I had not asked for. I googled what to do and it said change passwords and security questions to secure the account. Some info also said when someone has your email and maybe a password or some information a bot will try that email address/password on loads of sites to try it's luck. Fortunately I knew my PayPal password was unique and if it was compromised it was not the same or similar to any of my other passwords. My new one is so strong I will struggle to remember it myself if I'm not careful.

I know it's a pain but you don't know what data has been compromised to make a bot try to log into loads of sites so I would change all your passwords and maybe security questions for at least all your important banking and financial sites and make them all unique.

Don't forget to secure your email address itself.

I keep a list of my passwords but even with the list someone would not know them. e.g. it might say HamsterMumsNumbers%
and the person finding the code would not know that Hamster was called Molly, mums house is IvyLane and the number you use is 6743.

You might even feel more secure setting up a new email and starting to move over to it.

Sorry you are experiencing this it's horrible.

Are they not just the usual phishing emails, aiming to get you to give your details?

I keep getting told I have a match on Tinder. I've never been on Tinder in my life but I can see that could give the wrong impression to a suspicious mind.

I got a text today supposedly from Santander with a verification code and the number to call if I hadn't asked for it.

It was worded in the exact same way as a real verification code message would be.

The sure signs it was dodgy was it came from a normal mobile phone number and when I googled, the number the text message told me to call was not the number Santander tell you to call if you've been sent it incorrectly.

I don't have a Santander account and the only reason I googled was in case someone had incorrectly typed my mobile phone number as theirs and then I'd have called to see if I could get my number removed.

It's annoying but block and ignore. I get at least 4 calls a day that I don't answer that are clearly spam calls (or if they're not, no-one ever leaves me a voicemail).

dementedpixie · 28/07/2023 20:39

Maybe someone has mistyped their phone number in their own banking details so you get the code every time they buy anything online

Winter2020 · 28/07/2023 20:41

It is people/a bot trying to get access to or set up accounts where they would go on to do fraudulent purchases or scam people under your name.

I don't know if the code I received from PayPal was a code generated to purchase something or a code because someone had used my email and clicked "forgotten password" chose a new one and needed to verify with a code. It was definitely from Paypal because it joined the other legitimate codes in my text messages.

Imagine it was a code to verify a new password. If a scammer/bot has thousands of email addresses and the bot puts them all into a site then chooses "forgotten password", thousands of verification codes might then be sent. Even if the bot then enters a random code perhaps it would get one or two codes right among thousands? Or perhaps if your two step verification is email and they have already hacked your email.... ....off to change email password!

If they are coming from multiple sources it does sound like someone who maybe gets their phone number wrong but you'd think theys realize something was off when they didnt get the codes

I cant think what a scam would be, how would having codes sent to the wrong number with no link be part of a scam ?

greenacrylicpaint · 28/07/2023 20:48

bots/ai trying it on.

ignore & block.

I hate tge current 'appification' so easy to click on the wrong verification link if it's plausible.

Thats exactly what I was thinking, it’s been going on for about two weeks now, so surely they’d notice they haven’t been getting codes for two weeks??
I can’t figure out how it’d be a scam as there’s no number to call/no link/no follow up?

thanks everyone for your help!

Hoping you will reply and then you may be compromised, just ignore, do not reply.

I got codes for quite a few things and it's not possible to reply to them, I've checked mine and the only one that actually has a box to type a reply into is PayPal but I don't know if it would send anywhere

QuarterPastThree · 25/01/2024 19:08

I got a text yesterday from HSBC asking me to contact them urgently about my mortgage application. No contact details or link, I would have had to text back again or phone the number it came from. That's probably how they home in on the gullible - they are the ones who reply.
