Does it hurt your legs when dogs jump up?

Just curious - is this normal? (This is not a dog bashing thread!)

A couple of friends have excitable dogs, who jump up when they greet you. I love their doggy enthusiasm for life and for greeting me, but their claws hurt my thighs, which makes me flinch.

Not just dogs, but when my children were little, their elbows and feet on the front of my legs was excruciating.

Other people don't appear to feel it as much.

Why are my thighs so sensitive?

Yes!! Hurts me when my dog climbs up and she's only a little pug, especially when I'm wearing thin PJ's. Ok.ehen I'm wearing jeans though :/

It'll depend on the dog, how much pressure they use, how long the claws are, size of claws. My own dog only jumps up at people he knows and still trying to train him out of that but his don't hurt at all as his claws are kept short and he doesn't put all his weight on you. I've found little dogs with thinner sharp claws can hurt.

Depends how fast they do it, how much force they put into it, how heavy they are, how long their claws are, clothes you're wearing etc. It doesn't usually hurt me but occasionally it gives a bit of a sharp shock.

Yes. Some claws are similar to the top end of a pencil- firm, narrow, can withstand a lot of pressure. 5-10 of them on you, scratching down your skin does hurt! Elbows and other sharp parts of kids hurt my legs too- It is normal! Your sensitivity depends on muscle, how much meat you have on your bones etc.

I am a dog basher though so I'll stop there!

MogTheMoogle · 28/07/2023 12:12

Depends on the dog, and exactly where they hit.

Some dogs have sharp claws, or just a certain way they jump that puts more weight into the claw bit of their paw. Plus some will jump up and hold, which is less painful. One that's jumping and can't or won't seem to get purchase, so constantly paws at you hurts more.

Sometimes they hit just the "right" spot that's painful. Like they hit the boney bit. I have fat thighs (and everything else) so I think that must hurt less than for a thinner person based on the boney bits.

My legs always have bruises from my dog jumping up (usually today a toy when playing)

Balloonhearts · 28/07/2023 12:58

Mine doesn't but I think that's because she only jumps at people she knows and she sort of wraps her front legs round in a sort of hug so you don't get the claws so much. If they launch themselves at you it does.

Babyroobs · 28/07/2023 13:27

It really hurts my things when my smaller dog climbs on my knee. I think it's just the shape of her feet ! Younger dog is much chunkier/ heavier but doesn't make me flinch in the way my smaller dog does.

Duckafuk · 28/07/2023 13:35

Mine weighs 7 stone so he could knock me on my arse if he decided to jump up.
My mum's collie loves to take a flying leap at anyome washing up at the sink - it doesnt hurt its more the element of suprise because you never see or hear him coming 😲😆

Shopper727 · 28/07/2023 13:38

It can hurt my reliever can grip on a bit
He’s big and heavy too have a big bruise where he jumped up in fright at something and scratched down my leg.

when my kids were smaller I used to get annoyed with their spiky elbows knees etc digging in me they are sharp. Seems they got their pointy elbows etc from me boyfriend complains about mine often lol

TantalisingCantaloupe · 28/07/2023 13:50

Really hurts! I have nasty varicose veins in my thighs and have once had one burst from an over enthusiastic greeting from a park dog. That was shit, because I couldn't really walk for a few days, but mostly it's just painful.

I teach kids, fast, to be careful with my legs, but I have frequent issues with them too. Anything jumping up my legs can cause me quite a bit of pain really (arthritic too). Still praying for that lottery win to get the veins fixed!

DiscoDragon · 28/07/2023 14:02

Yes it hurts me too, my mum's got a small terrier and he always jumps up when I go round and it really bloody hurts!

My 9yr old son has ADHD and often uses me as a climbing frame, elbows and knees or chin digging into some soft fleshy part of my body and that all hurts too!

ArsMamatoria · 28/07/2023 14:07

OK, it seems I'm not that much of an overly sensitive snowflake!
