Please help to choose between two jobs

Hi all, please can wise Mumsnetters help me to choose between two job offers 🙏.
I have primary age school DC and will need to fit the work around DC and DH who has a long commute 2 days pw.

Job A: take home salary £1,300 pm, part-time, 1 day in the office, 3 days WFH. Can do Flexi hours, if necessary .
Weekly commute costs: £0 (a short walk from home);
Weekly commute time: 40 min walk per week in total.

Job B: take home salary £1,900 pm full time, 3 days in the office, 2 WFH. Not so flexible, have to be in the office minimum 3 days.
Weekly commute costs: approx £20-25 pw petrol cost (3 days in the office), if not stuck in traffic;
Weekly commute time in total: approx 4.5 hrs.

Both jobs offer similar benefits package. Job A seems "easier" on paper and less stressful, but Job B will have better career prospects, looks more interesting and fits better with my previous experience.

Thank you 😊

Job A, traffic can be a nightmare at times, wear and tear on the transport, then fuel costs

EmmaPaella · 28/07/2023 00:35

I’d go for Job A. I am waiting until kids are in secondary to ramp it up at work because of how much there is to do for kids at primary age and the silly school hours. I am not you though.

MsMarple · 28/07/2023 00:47

I’d prioritise flexibility and no commute at this stage. Job A, unless you have family nearby eager to help out, or DH’s work will always let him have time off when the kids are sick or for random inset days etc?

I would choose job B - higher salary, better fit, more interesting and better prospects.

But I'd only take it on condition that your two days each week at home could be the two days your husband is on his long commute days. Presumably he's at home or nearer home the other three days when you would then be in the office.

100% job A while your kids are young. You’d be giving yourself a lot more stress and a lot less time for £600 extra. Not worth the effect on home life. As pp said, ramps it up when the children start secondary school and can be more independent.

Thank you all for your replies ☺️
No family nearby, unfortunately, and we will have to pay for emergency childcare 😞. Husband WFH 3 days. He does school pick ups and drop offs when he can, but often has urgent client meetings, and I get a few hours notice only, if I am lucky!
I am leaning towards Job A for the reasons you all stated, even though it would be a step down for me 😔

Thank you again for your replies, it's helpful to get other people's perspective 🤗

Job A no contest

AndyMcFlurry · 28/07/2023 01:56

Job b definitely.

Summer2424 · 28/07/2023 03:00

Hi @Nightgarden23 i would go for job A

Tetchypants · 28/07/2023 09:09

I took a step down @Nightgarden23, more money would’ve been nice but I will never ever regret having all that extra time with my children. You don’t get that time back.

ImDoingThisNow · 28/07/2023 09:13

Job A.

Time is money.

Spending time with your family when young is invaluable.

You're not past it…. Get a different job when they are older.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/07/2023 10:40

Where in primary school are they? There a big difference between 4 and 11!

If they are still in KS1, I'd stick to job A.
If secondary school is in sight, I'd go for job B.

Catsanfan · 28/07/2023 11:11

I think it depends how old the kids are, if they are nearly secondary job B, if 5/6 ish job A

Sprig1 · 28/07/2023 11:16

Absolutely A with primary school kids.

Nightgarden23 · 28/07/2023 11:36

DC are 9 and 7, so still a few years until secondary.
Thank you for your replies 😊
