Which job would you choose?

Hey! I've been thinking about this for hours and need to make a decision.

I currently make £21,255 a year just doing an admin office role, however really really want a career and want to get into HR. Which of the following sounds best?

Job 1 - HR Administrator in the centre of Manchester, 23k. I told the lady that I was just about to start studying foru CIPD Level 3. I haven't bought it yet but she did mention that this would be a great advantage to the role. It costs 2k which I would be paying for myself

Job 2 - This is actually an apprenticeship but it's literally 10 minutes away from me, they will pay for the CIPD for me. However it's £20,800.

Is there any point in me spending time doing an apprenticeship when there is a job offer for me already with more money? Or is the apprenticeship worth it because it would only be a small pay cut and I wouldn't have to pay for the CIPD? Plus being 10 mins away is ideal, my commute to the Manchester job would be an hour.

Both people contacted me this week and I need to get back to them tomorrow but I don't want to make the wrong decision

Option 1. It will be advantageous to have HR in your title when you apply for the job after this. And your salary in this new job will enable you to get more in your next job. It's much easier to ask for £28000 if you earn £23000 now. Hope that makes sense. Good luck

Hi @Ilovedavidmitchell
i would go for job 2 - the apprenticeship. It's 10 mins away, money is ok tbh and they're paying for your cipd.
With job 1, it's too far, travel costs add up and you have to pay for the cipd.
All the best in your decision x

What happens in organisation 2 once the apprenticeship ends? Which has better opportunities for development? What sectors are they in and is one more interesting to you? What impression have you got so far from your dealings with each organisation?

Job 1. Within 2 years you could be an HR Officer, and another 2-3 years an HR Manager. Lots of career potential and loads of opportunities in HR.

Thanks for your opinions everyone!

@MurielThrockmorton the apprenticeship is in education, at a sixth form college. The Manchester job is for a construction company. The people at the construction company were really down to earth and friendly and made me feel at ease. It seems quite a relaxed place. The people for the apprenticeship were also friendly but it was a lot more nerve wracking and formal.

I already work in education at the moment for an apprenticeship company. Not entirely the same but I do have some experience with students and onboarding etc so I'm more interested in that industry. But the other job seemed like a great environment and is more money

I would choose the one in the construction company. It’s a section with better pay and better scope of development. If it’s not for that, I would choose the 10min commute and CIPD paid. I’m assuming you are young and have no children and that you can afford 2 hour travelling daily.

I think you’d get a better grounding in HR going the apprenticeship route than self study. How big is the construction company? Do they have a proper HR department so you’ll gain the right knowledge and experience to further your career?
