When did you start using pens/fountain pens at school?

Kids these days start using pens (erasable ones to start with) from around Y4 or 5 in Primary school. I seem to remember I started using them in Secondary (born in the 80s!) and got me wondering.

Please share if you remember when you started writing in ink pens!

Y3, if you were 'chosen' (I was). This was late 70s.

I still use fountain pens to this day.

I'm not sure how old I was, but I remember having a German au pair who would buy me sweets on the way home if I didn't have ink on my hands. I suspect I had inky hands most days!

In primary school in the 1960s. We had ink pots and dip pens - yes I know, it sounds so Victorian Grin

We had handwriting lessons and were taught to write cursive, but you wouldn't think so to look at my writing now.

Yes. Me too.

We used pens in year six. I can't remember whether we started using them part way through year six or towards the end of year five ready to use them throughout year six but I seem to remember there being some kind of test or criteria for being allowed to use a pen. Maybe we only used the pen for handwriting practice at first, I can't recall the specifics but we definitely used pens in year six.

We weren't allowed biros, had to be fountain pens, ink roller ball or felt. We were given a Beryl Handwriting pen to start with.

I was at primary school in the 80s.

I can't remember what I used at primary school but I do remember getting a fountain pen when I moved up to secondary as it was on the stationery list.

The Schaeffer No Nonsense from memory.

Junior school in the 90s. Everyone wrote in pencil but then you would “qualify” to write with a pen. There was Apprentice Scribe, a middle level that I don’t remember the name of, and Master Scribe when you were awarded with a fountain pen. I remember being very chuffed to be the only Master Scribe at the time! I used to love the handwriting lessons. I was a bit of a nerd…

I was definitely using a cartridge pen before I left primary school. Maybe year 5 or possibly even year 4? Actually, I remember having a Berol Handwriting Pen before the cartridge pen. It was browny beige with blue ink.

I was at primary in the 60s so it was inkwells and those wooden pens with a nib on the end. We had to use fountain pen for homework and biros were only allowed for the 11+ practice.

We were taught Marion Richardson script.

In my school, pen licenses were awarded in y4. As the only person who didn't have one, I started y5 writing in pen and hoping the teacher had forgotten she'd not given me permission. Still love fountain pens now!
