Can anyone NOT eat all the sweets once the bag is open?

I have two bags of chocolate sweets brought back from holiday. They are amazing. The first bag is gone - eaten in one or two sittings. Felt faintly sick and annoyed I’d got through them like that. They’ll be expensive to repurchase from the UK, too, so I’d like to make them last.

Are there others who can make sweets/chocolate last longer once the bag is open and if so, what are your special powers? I’d like to have, say, three sweets a night, for a treat after my evening meal.

Have thought of giving them to DP to look after and dole out to me but suspect he would have the same problem and just eat them all!

Oh bog off with your self righteousness.

My husband, the freak, can eat half a chocolate bar.

you asked the question, be prepared for any answers.

Self control is a good thing to learn for all areas of life.

I literally never get to eat any chocolate or sweets, because I have one, and then someone else in the house eats the entire bag. I not really a sweet treat sort of person though,

JellyfishandShells · 27/07/2023 16:40

I can happily eat just one or two sweets or pieces of chocolate - really not bothered. Same with biscuits or cakes . However- an open box or bag of Maltesers and they are gone. It’s absolutely a throw back to childhood when they were a Xmas or birthday treat for me ( the lovely rolling sound of them in their box ! ) and would spin them out for ages. I keep the treat aspect by never buying them myself but my family know I like them as occasion extra presents but I don’t hold back on the speed at which I demolish them now !

I can do it. I've eaten a whole bag of chocolates before and felt really unwell from it and hate that feeling. Every time I crave, I'll sit down with a cup of tea of coffee, chocolates and something to read. I see it as an event to be enjoyed rather than just eating on the hoof. I think that's what stops me from binging.

ScottBakula · 27/07/2023 16:41

I tend to go through phases of fancying things so it may be skittles for a month, then malteses at the moment it's jaffa cakes . But no matter what it is I am fairly good at not going mad.
I often have some wrapped sweets in my pocket at work , a sharing type bag of say humbugs will last me about two weeks.

I am also good at not impulse buying , if I want something I will make a note of it / put it on my amazon wish list etc and wait for a month to see if I still want it. Most of the time I can't even remember what the item was without really having to think about it.

UnaOfStormhold · 27/07/2023 16:45

I don't find I have a particular urge to finish sweets or chocolates, but I can't eat just half a mozzarella ball and I have stopped buying Peter's yard sourdough crackers as I know I will keep going back for just one more until there aren't any.

Cattlepillar · 27/07/2023 16:45

Depends what it is. We've got a huge box of m&s chocolate biscuits that has been sat open for ages. My body is very good at self regulating so when I was breastfeeding DS and really needed the extra calories I had zero self control and ate so much chocolate. Now I've stopped breastfeeding him I just don't fancy it.

BrunchMonster · 27/07/2023 17:00

I can't do it either, so you're not alone, OP

It's like the last taste of it just makes me need another, like it almost changes my brain I think, however good my intentions are - it's anything sweet that does it, whether I feel sick even or whatever, I just need more of whatever I've just had.

The only way around it is never to have any, but then I get really miserable and crave it simply because I'm not allowed any, so that doesn't entirely work either.

I need to stop the carbs totally as I am pre-diabetic, but it has never worked - I've managed it for about 3 months, almost no carbs apart from berries, but I constantly thought about them the entire time and the cravings never went away. I will have to do it again soon though if I can't get self control any other way. it's so miserable though.

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 27/07/2023 17:15

I can easily have 1 or 2 sweets or chocolates..., crisps are a completely different story.

HowNice23 · 27/07/2023 17:16

I can make a packet of biscuits last a year (in all seriousness) but open a bottle of wine and whoops its all gone so on balance I think you're doing better than me!

largeprintagathachristie · 27/07/2023 18:04

@TheNoodlesIncident
The desirable sweets are from New Zealand, also found in Aus. They're called Pineapple Lumps, which isn't the greatest name, but they are just so, so moreish.
..."a chocolate covered confection with a soft, chewy pineapple-flavoured middle." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineapple_lumps

Your technique involving pantry, clipped bag, put three items on plate, reseal bag, take plate elsewhere sounds excellent, and will help me to spin out the deliciousness.

I can exercise amazing self control when it comes to good and sweet treats. Sadly it doesn’t extend to my shopping habits!

DP is the complete opposite - great with money but once sweets or snacks are discovered they’re gone.

clowniform · 27/07/2023 18:51

Easily. Also perfectly happy to stop after 1 glass of wine. My weaknesses are fresh bread with butter, crisps (and chips) and cheese. But I haven't ever eaten anything to the point of feeling sick, though I know it's a thing, it just feels as unimaginable to me as trichotillomania etc.

SpringIntoChaos · 27/07/2023 19:59

Totally depends on what sweets/treats we are talking about here 🤷‍♀️

My daughter (34 - not talking 'kid' here 🤣) can absolutely restrict any bag/pack/box of any sort to 'a few' at a time. She has an iron will the likes of which I can only aspire!

Me - I have a 'willpower hierarchy':

Pringles/Kettle Chips (family size bag) - no chance! Once you pop, you just can't stop!

Haribo/jelly tots/wine gums/any kind of pastille type sweet: same principle as above!

Skittles/boiled sweets/similar wrapped sweets/mints: a handful and I can put the bag away until I remember they are there another day.

Chocolate: I still have boxes from Christmas in my cupboards - they don't hold my attention for more than a 'square' 🤷‍♀️

PretendUsername · 27/07/2023 20:03

Ah good old Mumsnet, always full of competitive under eaters discussing how amazing they are at self control.

Pull the other one.

PimpMyFridge · 27/07/2023 23:34

I can ignore sweets for weeks, curry on the other hand... Whole other story. 😋

gingerguineapig · 28/07/2023 12:15

My downfall is crisps but I put some in a bowl and then don't eat the whole bag.

Cheese is hard as well, I struggle not to keep snacking on it.

gingerguineapig · 28/07/2023 12:16

There is definitely something addictive in Pringles. But I don't buy them because they are an eco-sin.

Also peanuts - I only buy one bag at Christmas because they are too more-ish.

Singleandproud · 28/07/2023 12:24

DD has ridiculous self control and I do not know where she got it from, she's still got Christmas and Easter chocolate left which will probably end up being binned.

As a toddler I did the experiment on her where you leave a marshmallow in front of the child for 5 minutes with the promise that they would get 2 if it was still there when you come back and she did this easily. It's meant to demonstrate the childs ability to delay personal gratification and be an indicator of future success or some such thing. I guess it would be a sign of financial stability in that those who need things 'now' and need the newest car or technology are more likely to get in debt than those that can wait for the things they want.

I would eat the bag of sweets and eat the marshmallow but I am a saver and have only gotten into debt for kitchen and bathroom refurbs as they were needed desperately. I am not interested in having the newest tech or clothes though.

megletthesecond · 28/07/2023 12:28

I can just take a handful then pop the packet back. Same for biscuits, I don't eat more than 3 at a time. I have biscuits every day though.
I've even recently mastered leaving crisps in the packet for another day.

Floralnomad · 28/07/2023 12:31

I can happily have one sweet or biscuit and also save well . I currently have a box of truffles that my neighbour gave me about a month ago and I have one or two a couple of times a week .

fuckthisprivilage · 28/07/2023 12:33

I definitely have a scale from sweet to savoury...

Sweets - easily - I'm not a massive fan of sweets in general, although there certain ones I like.

Chocolate - still easy to resist, although I do enjoy it.

Cheese - can eat in large quantities but usually manage to not to embarrass myself

Cheesy nibbles, nice crisps - getting harder

Whotsits - literally unable to stop myself. Would a bag from the hands of my own children.

Rebootnecessary · 28/07/2023 12:38

Wilkolampshade · 27/07/2023 15:21

Well I don't really have a sweet tooth, so yes, with no difficulty at all.

Crisps, however.....

This is me too. An open bag of sweets is no temptation to me. An open bag of crisps however ....

AffIt · 28/07/2023 12:46

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 27/07/2023 15:14

I have selection boxes left from Christmas, but am terrible for crisps/cheese/olives etc.
I just don't have a sweet tooth.

Me too - I'll eat a tub of olives at a sitting, but chocolate or sweets don't really interest me.

Although given the amount of salt in an average tub of olives, I don't think I'm necessarily winning in any way... 😄

EmpressSoleil · 28/07/2023 13:02

With sweets or chocolate I just have a small bit and that's enough for me. I don't really get pleasure from eating sweet things. I'm not that virtuous though as once a bottle of wine is open I can't not drink all of it 😂
