Anything else I can do re: climate change and lifestyle?

  1. We both walk/cycle everywhere within our large village (so car only used for work, odd day trip, essential purchases). Often go on a walk up local hill rather than use car for day trip,

  2. We eat vegetarian about 5-6 days a week, fish the other days. DH might chose a meat option if eating out.

  3. Try to only make essential purchases (and not keep replacing things like phones, tvs until broken), and recycling/taking items to charity when no longer needed.

  4. Try to keep gas/electric bill down (our bills are a lot lower than many).

Financially I need to rule out renewing heating system, electric car and solar panels.

I know the changes one family can make are miniscule, but I'm find it quite alarming reading about global warming today, and what we're going to pass onto our children, grandchildren.

Not many people want the human race to die out and even fewer want themselves and their family to die?

RoyKentFanclub · 28/07/2023 19:12

Every single thread like this with people genuinely wanting to make changes descends into a bunfight about birth rates with the vocal MM climate change deniers. Everyone should just stop feeding the trolls and literally ignore them on the threads.

OP what do you do in terms of the food you buy? It’s one of the biggest changes you can make to eat seasonally and locally. It’s really worth growing your own high impact food too. Things like berries and other soft fruit are carbon heavy since they have to be transported quickly and require refrigeration but they’re so easy to grow.

Do you buy clothing and furniture second hand on Vinted/Facebook marketplace etc?

Do you harvest water, collecting rainwater and reusing grey water?

RoyKentFanclub · 28/07/2023 19:17

One thing that doesn’t get talked about much is cut flowers. They get flown in every day and have a massive carbon footprint. There is simply no need. We can grow flowers during more than half of the year in this country and the rest of the time can use dried flowers. It’s important to buy British seasonal flowers or to grow your own for cutting and having in the house.

Is there a refill shop near you for food / toiletries to cut down on packaging? If not you could try Splosh, it's online.

RoyKentFanclub · 28/07/2023 19:31

If you buy your food mainly at a supermarket and you drive there it is far better to get your shop delivered. The carbon footprint of one vehicle doing ten deliveries is much lower than those ten all making the trip there and back.

The most environmentally friendly thing anyone can do is not have children.
Anything else anyone in the U.K. tries to do is pretty futile.

Respectfully fatalistic points of view like yours are just wrong, especially if you have children. My DH is an Architect and designs sustainable buildings, there is no doubt about it - him doing that is wholly beneficial on a large scale. I think occupations can massively offset your carbon footprint. I work in Data protection which in essence is upholding a fundamental human right to privacy so our impact on the environment around us in a professional capacity at least is quite minimal. We can definitely do other things in a private capacity. We have two children we are not just going to shrug our shoulders and say, 'oh well.' IMO this akin to being a climate change denier and that is morally repugnant!

FKATondelayo · 28/07/2023 19:41

If you have a local playground or public space made of tarmac or concrete, get funding to convert it to a natural surface with trees and pollinators. This funding is available but the professional play sector is decimated by austerity so nobody is applying for the grants. Form a local group and apply for these.

RoyKentFanclub · 28/07/2023 19:43

If you don’t have trees in your garden plant a few. The shading benefits alone are going to be enormous as our climate continues to heat up.

@onefinemess
Ok so if we stopped procreating what would be the point in saving the planet? We would cease to exist anyway.
Here's a medal for being brain box of the year 🥇

You think the planet is only here for humans, you really are that arrogant a human being to think it's pointless without us?? It's existed for 4.6 billion years, we are but a tiny blip and have utterly decimated it in a few thousand years. I would love for the population to slowly decrease and for the animals and ecosystems to gradually recover. That would be the point.

Agree, everyone can plant trees or subscribe to an organisation like the Woodland Trust or National Trust who will plant on your behalf of you haven't got the room.

Going vegan is one of the best things you can do for the environment.

Drenchend · 28/07/2023 21:05

Lobby your mp and khan to stop attacking public transport.
Keep it low cost to make it attractive to people to get out of cars.

He's trying to remove the travel card.

As a diesel owning car family we will drive in instead.

Lobby again mps to put pressure on China, iran, Russia etc to stop emissions and ask for report on places like north Korea.

You could sign up for the next Ripple renewable energy project.

You put up some money to join a cooperative, which then builds and operates a source of renewable electricity. There is one wind turbine already producing, a windfarm of 8 turbines under construction, and a solar farm on the way. Whatever your share of the project produces, is sold to your energy supplier (which has to be one of Ripple’s partners) and then appears as a credit on your energy bill.

You can invest any amount from £25 up to enough to fund 120% of your annual usage. The wind projects are expected to generate for 25 years, the solar farm for 40 years.

Also, you can choose to support the woodland trust with your m and s sparks card.

The data one is a biggie. The cloud uses loads of energy so unsubscribing from newsletters and deleting emails, attachments, pics etc and not going anywhere near crypto.

BillaBongGirl · 01/08/2023 13:46

Strange. I’m 5ft nothing and they don’t strangle me. I adjust the seatbelt height downwards- which cars have had standard for donkeys years now. Are you not adjusting your seat belts?

Yes, always adjust it. Have you small boobs? I have large ones and it always slides upwards over them to rest at the neck. It won't stay between them.

Thank you for that one. You have motivated me to get serious about my 1000+ email inbox and some of the rubbish photos I haven’t bothered going through.

Hi, where can I find info on this please?

Treacletoots · 02/08/2023 07:49

Don't rule out an electric car. The second hand prices have plummeted recently and as an owner for over 3 years now with no issues whatsoever I'd have no problem recommending second hand, despite what all the tabloids keep trying to scare you about them.

Same with solar, wind turbine and air source. We borrowed the money to put this in on the mortgage and we save on energy at least double what this costs to pay for. Often on sunny days we keep the cars charged entirely from the solar. Financially a very sound investment.

Do you grow your own veg, compost everything you can.

Your solar panels cost how much?

How long to break even?

How much did your EV cost?

How long to break even?

You save double the cost of domestic solar panels, a heat pump and a wind turbine? Plus the extra interest on the mortgage borrowing.

You powering a village or what? 😬

Going vegan is one of the best things you can do for the environment.

Just don't eat avocados or use palm oil based products.

Or pineapples.

Or any berries which are commercially grown.

RoyKentFanclub · 02/08/2023 14:22

Pineapples are actually not too bad along with bananas, coconuts and citrus fruit. They last for a long time so are typically shipped via sea rather than flown in.

Caththegreat · 11/06/2024 07:54

Have less children but no one talks about that.
