This obsession with 'class' - is it a thing in Scotland?

I'm Scottish myself and it's honestly not something I've ever thought about.

Am I in a minority? Am I secretly being judged by my peers? Or is it predominantly an English hang-up?

Definitely a thing. I don't hear people specifically talk about 'class' but it obviously exists given the various subsections of society.

A couple of people have agreed with me about the rural Highlands, but phrased it differently, but I think we are saying the same thing!
I don't hear people talking about class. I mean, during my entire childhood to age 18 I never once heard anyone mention it. That is not to say rich/posh people don't exist! But nobody ever refers to them as a class iyswim. They don't get called 'upper class' or whatever. They are just people who own land and have lots of money. I can think of about five of these people who are major local landowners, who I know by appearance only.

Then there is everyone else. I couldn't possibly divide my village into different classes. There is no such thing. There are just people with less money and people with more money, but there are no categories of people. We all went to the same primary school and the same high school. We all have common ancestors! Just because people have different amounts of money surely doesn't mean they can be grouped into middle/working class when they themselves do not recognise these terms and have never used them throughout their history.

Someone could come in from outside and say 'this family is middle class because of xyz' but that doesn't make it true. I couldn't go to say Edinburgh (which I did find had a class system which people occasionally mentioned) and tell them that in India they would be class X. That doesn't apply to them because it isn't Edinburgh culture.

I've read all the posts and they're very interesting! But I stand by my original statement that not all of Scotland is the same. Just because people say they are working class in Glasgow, or rural Perthshire, doesn't mean that it is a thing in my area. It isn't.

I was at university with several Scots who had been sent to boarding schools in England with the express purpose of ensuring that they lost their Scottish accents and acquired RP ones. It was 100% motivated by class. I don’t know if this is still a thing. They are in their forties and thinking about it they all ended up living in England so I can’t compare what they have done for their own children.

It's a thing everywhere. I mean everywhere on earth. The only way you can get outside it is to be a foreigner somewhere. Foreigners are foreigner class.

The most class obsessed person I know is from Glasgow. She constantly talks about what she considers to be "common" and what she considers to be "posh". Looks down snerringly on people, which is hilarious considering her background. It's funny a previous poster mentions living in Glasgow's West End as this is where she now lives and (like the pp) won't just say she lives in Glasgow, it's always "I live in Glasgow - the West End".

@TipsyAndTommy naw places like Newton Mears and parts of Bearsden..Also big walloping detached town houses in Kelvinside and parts of Pollokshields...
Everyone is working class and on a level playing field in Glasgow until you want their job, to marry their son/daughter/ get a decent house / get a fair wage ...
Then you realise what class you are very quickly.

Oh and the most important one ! Something currently relevant for my family ! If you need medical treatment. How quickly you get that treatment ( operation) ...
