18 yr old end of free prescriptions/dental care?

My DD is 18 recently finished Yr 13 and waiting for A’level results. She is taking a gap year before deciding about Uni etc.

Last night our dentist charged her for a check up but I’m wondering if that is correct or whether the free treatment should continue until the end of the academic year (as is the case for child benefit). She also has a repeat prescription for her inhaler and wondered when she has to start paying for that. She doesn’t earn very much in her pt job.

Can anyone advise? Thanks.

She's no longer in education and is working, so yes, it's correct. Would suggest doing a prepayment certificate for meds as it's only around a tenner a month.

Shes just left year 13 so seems right that she’s been charged.

She has to declare she is in full time education, can she do that if she's left?
If not, look at HC2 for low income, apply on gov.uk

@toomuchfaster - it was really whether the ft education definition was applicable until the end of the academic year in which she left ie 31/8. I can keep claiming child health benefit for her up to that date and if she changed her mind after getting her results and decided to apply to Uni it would continue until she’s 19 so I think it’s a bit of a grey area.

I’ll ask her to look into the HC2 - thanks.

If you are still on receipt of child benefit it should be free l think? Until the end of the academic year?

Herecomesthemoon · 27/07/2023 14:59

I think she should be entitled to free dental care and prescriptions until Child Benefit stops at the end of August. In London 18 year olds are also entitled to free travel until the end of August. surely being in receipt of Child Benefit means the Government considers you still a child until it ends.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow and @Herecomesthemoon - thanks. I asked at pharmacy and they confirmed it’s free prescriptions until end of August. Dentist said I can apply to claim the dental fees back.

Did you get anywhere with this? My daughter was charged too. Her dentist told her in June just as she was leaving sixth form to make an appointment in August about a potential filling so she’d get it done for free. Now they are saying she has to pay for both the check up and filling despite what he told her in June. Why would she have two check ups within 3 months of each other 🙄I also was told by the the receptionist that free NHS dental care was til the end of August! I’ve also found this.

@Izzybusy23 - sorry , just saw your post. I have applied to claim the cost back as I’m fairly sure the cut off date is 31/8. This makes sense as it’s the end of the academic year she finishes school, that’s when my child benefit stops as do her free prescriptions.

Oh bugger, I paid for DDs prescription for the first time today.

Allsizes8to14 · 16/08/2023 21:31

The form you need is a HC1, we have them at work (am optometrist) pharmacies and dentists should have them too. Fill it in and send away and you’ll either get a HC2 certificate back for full help which means dentist/pharmacy/opticians all free again - they do look at things like any income from a PT job etc but I’d expect her to get full help. If not, she might get a HC3 which is for partial help/subsidised costs. Anyone on a low income but not on qualifying benefits should do them! They’re just not advertised 🙄

Just realised that is all on the pic above that I didn’t read properly 🤦🏼‍♀️!
