Walking to Heathrow

primoseyellow · 27/07/2023 10:34

I suddenly had a random thought after seeing a video of a house under a flight path. If you worked at Heathrow at one of the shops and you lived in a surrounding street, are you allowed/is it possible to walk into the airport?

Or not for security reasons etc.

There’s not many pavements on the approach so it might not be the safest but you can physically walk to the terminals if you want to

Ifailed · 27/07/2023 10:40

You can certainly cycle their, either for work or travel.

There !!

T4 yes, very easy.

T5 certainly used to be able to, via the western bit of perimeter road but if I recall it correctly only from the south (there's a pavement round to the North - the Longford direction -but there are signs prohibiting pedestrians)

Central Area (T1,2, 3 or whatever is open ATM) - pretty sure that's a no...I think there was a footpath/bike path many moons ago that ran parallel to the road tunnels but AFAIK that's no longer open.

Needmorelego · 27/07/2023 10:49

Many moons ago I knew someone who worked in a shop air-side at Birmingham Airport and had to go through a special staff security entrance.
Anyone can just walk into the land-side part of an airport though. You can just hang out all day at an airport if you want to.

Needmorelego · 27/07/2023 10:50

Or do you mean literally “walk to work”?
If there’s a footpath I can’t see why not.

Cookerhood · 27/07/2023 10:53

There definitely used to be a footpath through the tunnel, my dad used to drop me & I walked through to get the coach to uni. Not sure about these days though, I suspect it would be car or tube/bus etc.

Clymene · 27/07/2023 10:54

I don't see why not. I used to work in an office near Gatwick and walk into the airport to get lunch (the temptation to hop on a plane and not go back in the afternoon was sometimes overwhelming!)

I may be wrong but I think the footpath from northside to central closed decades back (sadly), not sure about bikes. AFAIK to access Central on foot you have to resort to one of the local buses to go through the tunnel.

Heathrow bye laws can prevent the use of some footpaths (e.g. north out of T5) and also for info also, strictly speaking, mean just going there to hang around might be problematic.

Not an official guide but might be on interest:

Heathrow is without a doubt one of the busiest airports in the world- it transports tens of millions of passengers in a year.

Much smaller comparison but there's a little hamlet just outside the fence of Bristol airport. You can pay to park your car with people who live there, cheaper than formal airport parking. Then it's a 15 min walk to the main terminal building, along the pavement and then a path through the airport grounds. I would guess people who live there probably work at the airport pretty often and walk in.

primoseyellow · 27/07/2023 18:43

Thank you everyone who replied, I was just really curious as on street maps it seems a maze of residential streets, school, cafe/farm shop etc right up to that wire fencing on the runways. Ive only ever gone in a car straight off the M4 (?) and you are suddenly at the drop off point.

OP posts:
notimagain · 28/07/2023 07:01

Yep arriving via the M4 spur and going straight into Central Area denies you the full Heathrow experience..😬

Northside of the airport on the Bath Road there are Hotels and house/B&Bs that are only separated from the perimiter fence by a couple of roads and car parks, if that.

Southside in places it's similar with regard to parts of Stanwell.

Get a bus. Its not an interesting walk and there's a lot of traffic.

For a passenger dragging suitcases, I'd agree, (though it's a shame TfL stopped the free bus zone...)

If OTOH you're just killing time there then there are one or two interesting walks to be had in the airport area.

Heathrow stopped contributing to it so it went. It was one of the things that they used in favour of shutting the foot tunnel to the central area in the late 2000s saying that anyone could hop on a bus to navigate to the central area - now locals have to pay an extra £3.50 per day to get to work there, or walk to a staff car park & get a staff shuttle bus.

FettleOfKish · 28/07/2023 07:58

Harder at a big airport like Heathrow with longer distances and lack of pavements, but plenty of people arrive at our local airport on foot. The doors into arrivals are an 8 minute walk from my office car park, so we always park there and walk round.

Ah yes, that was all kicking off around the time I stopped working there and I'd forgotten the details.

" locals have to pay an extra £3.50 per day" 😟

I've lost track, presumably that's the TfL standard bus fair now... ??

£1.75 there and £1.75 back, to a place where they closed the walking route

Iwouldlikesomecake · 28/07/2023 08:42

You CAN walk to Heathrow cos once my husband missed the last bus to the (now closed) T5 premier inn and he refused to pay the ridiculous cab fare and walked it 🤣 wouldn’t recommend it though

StillWantingADog · 28/07/2023 08:44

It’s a valid question and should be possible for pedestrians and bikes at all airports

i recall at Gatwick walking about a mile from a premier inn to a terminal about 10 years ago, it was fine

I live near MAN. You can def walk up there - you see people walking in dragging suitcases every day. Though I think it’s more common to walk if you work there.

crackofdoom · 28/07/2023 08:50

notimagain That walk- and the whole website- look fascinating!
