Why am I paying tax?

Just received my p60 (Yr 2022/23) and noticed that on a salary of £12,400, I paid £215.80 tax.

i thought that any income under £12,500 wasn't subject to income tax?

I work in a school so the office is now closed for the summer so I can't ask them so wondered if anyone here could suggest a reason.

Are you paid over 12 months or fewer?

Toffeesgirl · 26/07/2023 21:28

I'm paid over 12 months but that was my total income for that tax year.

It’s HMRC you need to speak to really, not the school office. Give them a call.

What is your tax code?
have you given some of your tax free allowance to your spouse ?

Chasingsquirrels · 26/07/2023 21:29

Either a W1/M1 tax code and uneven earnings, or a non-standard tax code for some reason (usually other income).
Your tax code should be on the P60.

caerdydd12 · 26/07/2023 21:30

What was your tax code?
You may have underpaid tax in a prior year (amongst other things) and this can cause an adjustment to your personal allowance of £12.5k.
The school won't be able to do anything, they'll use the tax code they're told to use. This is an issue between you and HMRC, but your starting point is your tax code. It should be on your payslip if that helps.

Toffeesgirl · 26/07/2023 21:31

Tax code is 1131N. Just off to Google that now!

N means you've transferred part of your personal allowance to your spouse. It can only be done on whole year basis so make sure if you don't want this to continue that you sort it out in time for April 2024.

Pinkitydrinkity · 26/07/2023 21:33

If it’s due back to you, HMRC will work it out and issue a repayment.

Toffeesgirl · 26/07/2023 21:33

OK, it looks like it is the marriage allowance thing (which I wasn't aware that I had done).

I'll have a proper look in the morning. Thank you all for your help.

Yes that tax code means you only get 11310 of tax free income instead of the usual 12500 ish. Probably means you underpaid tax last year and they are reclaiming it over time via adjustments to your tax code.

Smidge001 · 26/07/2023 21:34

Ah - I didn't notice the N. Agreed.

Alfiemoon1 · 26/07/2023 21:35

You get 11310 personal tax free allowance as you gave some of it to your dh - marriage allowance

minou123 · 26/07/2023 21:42

You probably did it in the past because you were earning less than £11,310, so giving your DH/DW 10% of your personal tax allowance made sense.
You would have applied for this online.
