Very sad to hear Sinéad O'Connor has died. She had an incredible voice. And like her or not, she was very much a woman of her convictions. Her son died last year. I hope they are both at peace.

That must give some comfort to her surviving children. To know she didn’t die of suicide.

Sounds like she did die of a broken heart. She just couldn’t get past the death of Shane. RIP to them both.

This may be me being thick but when they say "natural causes" what does that mean?

Wytchy · 09/01/2024 16:59

'According to the Ministry of Justice, death by natural causes is when an illness or condition is not linked to external forces and there are no "unusual circumstances".'

well foul play, suicide, drugs/alcohol, would all be external forces. so something in her body just stopped functioning of its own accord.

There was so much speculation at the time it must have been dreadful for her loved ones. I hope today's news gives them peace & closure.

I think massive assumptions were made about how she died at the time but this news is good to hear. Doesn't bring her back but it's better than thinking of what state of mind she would have been in to take her own life.

Not thick at all. It means something like a heart attack, stroke, cancer.... Something that just happens in your own body that you didn't choose.

Suicide is considered an unnatural cause because it's a deliberate killing. Being hit by a car or falling off a tall building is considered unnatural because even though it's an accident you wouldn't expect to die that way if you lived in a peaceful glen.

I was towards the end of her biography, when she said Shane was her soul mate when I heard he died. I couldn't finish the book, she had so many problems to overcome, bless her, but to lose him like that would finish off anyone. I'm surprised it was natural causes if I'm honest because she spoke so openly about her struggle just to stay alive, but I'm glad in the sense that it will bring great peace to her surviving young son who lost his brother too, he knows now his mother didn't intend to abandon him. RIP Sinead, a brave brave soul. I think anyone can see she was talented and remarkable but to an Irish woman like me who remembers the oppression of the Catholic church she was a hero.

While it must be a relief for her family that it wasn't suicide I do think it's an odd thing for the coroner to say. It isn't natural to die so young so whether it was a heart attack or respiratory failure while being 'natural' there would still be a cause.

Still, I think it's good that she's been allowed some privacy, we often hear chapter and verse of deceased medical issues which would be confidential when they were alive.

Thank you for explaining. When I see a younger person dying and they say it's "natural causes" I always think how is it natural to die at that age? But I understand now.
