Unrealistic expectations in tv soaps

I used to watch EE but haven't for the last 2 years. But even then so many inconsistencies it was unreal but yeah it's not real but it is meant to portray real life.

Only on going drama I watch is casualty bbc1

I'm currently to tired to list some of the things that happen in soaps/dramas that would not or never happen in real life! I'd like to see what you can come up with

@Butteredtoast55 , I agree. I would have watched CS around the same time and I remember when it was only on, on Mondays and Wednesdays. I vividly remember the episode when Deirdre left baby Tracey outside the corner shop and a lorry crashed into it. It was the Wednesday episode and I remember 9 year old me wondering how I would possibly make it to Monday! The suspense was real.
I haven't watched soaps in years though. I think they annoy me.
But thanks for this thread @onlynotafan , it's made me laugh !

Guineapigwoes · 26/07/2023 09:07

Yes the births! All take about 5 mins and happen in dramatic fashion. No one is ever induced!

Agree with the kids being so well
behaved. I was watching some vintage Corrie the other day and Tracy Barlow is forever being sent upstairs to wash her hands - I’d have turned into a soap baddie if I had spent that much time compliantly trudging up and down the stairs.

There is never any washing on the radiators either and (also vintage Corrie) everyone has a cup and saucer and a full breakfast every morning

Nobody ever gets the bus, tube or tram unless the storyline calls for a massive derailment and it ploughing through the marketplace

Sorry to nitpick, but Ofsted didn't start till 1992, and Albert Tatlock had been dead for years by then!

Good point. Whoever his character style in the CS narrative arc was then.

gillybombilly · 26/07/2023 09:24

Everyone has everyone else’s phone number.

A random phone rings when the owner isn’t there, and someone can open it as there is never a passcode, and then delete a text or voicemail.

csandsickofit · 26/07/2023 09:31

Call an ambulance/police and they're there in a couple of minutes. When someone (Craig) decides to join the police only a month later he was in uniform.

I was thinking that!
Everybody meets their life partner/s in the same street ,square ,village etc in fact their whole, life is in the same Street, square ,village
Every time there is an occasion like a wedding or christening all.the guests are neighbours even if they don't like them
I just about say hello.to my neighbours I can t imagine inviting them.to big family celebrations.

Butteredtoast55 · 26/07/2023 09:54

@echt I bet it was Percy Sugden 😀

I don't watch it anymore but is Craig the only police officer in weatherfield, and attends any police matter ?Like when Martin Platt was the only Nurse at weatherfield, general, and was always there wether people were giving ,birth had a broken leg ,having open heart surgery etc.

SouthCountryGirl · 26/07/2023 10:13

They're always in the pub. How do they have time for a job ?

Yet when they move away, even if it’s only an hour or so away, they never come back for any events. Not even for the closest family. And their non-attendance isn’t even mentioned.

Indeed or if it is mentioned its an after thought
Oh Rosie sent her love but can't possibly attend (whatever big family occasion )/as she has a cold .

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 26/07/2023 11:22

I agree with all this but I still love them. I was not allowed to watch them for years because controlling XP said they were 'common'. I love being common.

Realism isn't important for soaps - it's be really boring watching Chesney fill out UC applications and Kevin sort his whites and colours.

Elastic bedrooms. Six people living in a two up two down and seemingly all very happy with their space, even offering up room to a mate in need every now and then.

I always thought this about Eileen in corrie. Think there's currently 5 people living there and a few stay over every now and then. Does she live in the tardis!?

They grow extra bedrooms as and when needed ,I distinctly remember when Ashley and Maxine had their house it was two bedroom s but bit appears to.have acquired a third a long the way somewhere 🤔
And the rivers used ti.have a vert large function room in the 70s ,what's happened to.that space?

SecretVictoria · 26/07/2023 11:37

Need a job? Don’t worry a new hairdresser/nail bar/garage/factory is opening! No qualifications in those areas? Who cares?! Jobs yours!

renamedbutsame · 26/07/2023 11:38

Not sure serious and intelligent people watch soaps these days. May be in the past when the values were traditional, harmonious and Judeo-Christian. Not anymore.

LaMaG · 26/07/2023 11:41

Mum : (wanting to talk to someone) run along and play.
KIDS DO IT!! Literally never happened in real life

PossiblyNotOne · 26/07/2023 12:21

Can’t believe you watch Casualty and complain about EE! Casualty is terrible! As was Holby.

Anything medical.

Being nursed in a side room in a coma with no nurse.

Being ventilated via an oxygen mask.

Asystole being shocked with a defib.

Waking up from a ‘coma’ being able to eat, drink and talk. No rehab, ever.

Head injuries having a perfect head bandage .

Mercy1968 · 26/07/2023 12:34

Nobody ever goes to the toilet unless they want to snoop in someone else's house or bedroom.

People get counselling appointments really quickly and the time off work to go to them (Jack s family in EE).

Also EE Lexi s mum dies when she's 10 or 11 in a tragic way and Lexi s bouncing around singing and dancing at Kathy s wedding weeks later! Unless the trauma is going to come out later when she's at secondary school (new storyline?)

Anyone made homeless is usually fixed up with a new place in one of the elastic houses.

Mercy1968 · 26/07/2023 12:36

Also Eve the ex lawyer is always available for free advice and finds you just the right contact and support within hours.

Yes casualty I'm sure has many inconsistencies too but as I'm not a medical professional a lot of the medical talk goes over my head. EE's inconsistencies are however very noticeable but that wasn't the reason I stopped watching tho.

What a load of absolute nonsense 😂

I'm beginning to see why you claim you're being censored. "traditional, harmonious and Judeo-Christian".... 🙄

SoupDragon · 26/07/2023 13:20

I don't care about the inconsistencies with real life. I don't watch soaps for realism, I want to be entertained.

childbirth is a classic example of unrealistic I think. Plus the lack issues with childcare for going out to the pub.

MayThe4th · 26/07/2023 13:31

I haven’t watched them for years but:

Home and away - nobody actually brings up their own children - all the children there are fostered by someone, including Irene who had her own children removed from her because of her being an alcoholic but is now fostering all the local waifs and strays.
