Ideas for destashing my yarn collection?

Have come to painful conclusions about my excessive yarn stash versus how much knitting and crochet I can realistically do within my remaining lifespan.

I only have a couple of charity shops within easy reach and they’re not accepting donations. None of it is particularly amazing stuff, mostly acrylic and mostly aran or dk but a few balls or skeins with some real wool content, some garish paintbox cotton (aran weight).

See also: fabrics for sewing. I used to smoke and I have various house pets. What’s the best way to rehome it?

I got rid of a lot of cheap acrylic yarn I know I’d never use on a local Facebook group.

Facebook, local school, brownie/beavers/scout groups/ care homes if not charity shops, or on ravelry as free to good home.

There is an app called Olio that I've used to give a lot of things away, including yarn. The person who requests it comes to pick it up so it's much easier for me than taking it all to the charity shop.

Have a look on your local Facebook group. A woman on mine asks for yarn as she makes twiddle mat things out of yarn scraps for dementia patients.

I suppose I could join FB but would rather not. Maybe I’ll ask friends who already use it if they’d mind advertising it on there, might be cheeky? I almost feel like paying someone to take it off my hands, the reproach is killing me and I want the space back.

Look up Coastal Crochet Stash busting blanket. It's fab. There's a Facebook group for it as well.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 25/07/2023 18:46

Whoops, just seen you're not on FB. The website is good anyway

Ohyousillydivvy · 25/07/2023 18:46

The women's institute near me knits blankets for premature babies so ask your local branch if they'd like a donation of wool. Only give them the softest wool though as premature babies skin is very fragile.

Freecycle or Freegle

somuchwoolsolittletime · 25/07/2023 18:47

Missed loads of posts! I didn’t know that about olio, and ravelry is a good idea too.

I’m already keeping enough works in progress to see me into the afterlife so I’d better not look at any stashbusting projects!

Freecycle! Forgot about that. Also I know someone who does charity knitting projects so maybe I can give it to her!

Go along to a local church type craft fair and ask the ladies selling knitted items if they would like donations of wool or know anyone who would?
The women I know who never stop knitting for charity tend not to be on the internet and that would be the easiest way to make contact with them.

woodhill · 25/07/2023 19:40

Make a scrappy basket, this eats up loads of wool and all the odds and ends

cyclamenqueen · 25/07/2023 19:44

Local care homes or retirement complexes often have knitting groups.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 25/07/2023 19:51

I work in a school and every now and then I empty my yarn stash into a bin liner and give it to the art department. (Actually I usually just dump it anonymously and run, before the art and textiles teachers start yelling, 'Who the fuck has dumped all this crap on us again?!')

Hazelnuttella · 25/07/2023 19:55

EBay?
I like selling stuff because even if you don’t ask much for it at least you know it’s going to be used.
