Selling gold prices, am I being ripped off?

I've got 40 grams of broken 9ct gold and some stuff I don't wear.

I've sent it off to one of these cash for gold places and they've offered me £500. This seems really low, or is that the going rate.

Tempted to get them to send it back to me, or should I take their offer.

I walked into jeweller shops in town and asked for a quote. All gave quotes on the spot. There were hundreds of pounds difference between highest and lowest. Shop around.

You could possibly get a bit more, but not by much. Gold spot price is currently around usd1960. Your 9k 40g gold would be worth around £730 in its weight, but traders need to make a profit so they'll always offer you lower than that.

About right, 9ct gold fetches about £17.50 per gram x 40 = £700, buyer will need to make a profit.

Moneysaving Expert recommend Hatton Garden Metals for the best price and reliability.

According to their website, they'll give you £663.

I did this a few years ago and the day in inputted the details / amount etc and downloaded the postage label, it gave a quote for a certain amount. Then when I received the payment it was much less. I queried this and the gave some crap excuse about the price of gold being worth less (than date of the quote) on the day my gold arrived with them. I personally would take it into a jeweller if I did it again

@RoundAndBeautiful just resurrecting this thread, where did you sell your gold to for that price? Thanks

Helendegenerate · 26/10/2023 17:20

Earlier this year I decided to get rid of a couple of broken bits of gold jewellery and knew they were worth something so tootled off to a high street place to see what, if anything they might offer me.

£82 so I thanked them and said I would consider it. A few streets away another dealer weighed it and offered £150 so I accepted.

Not a fortune but these people have the same scales and calculators so do I assume the first offer was a deliberate attempt to rip off a customer?

Look at bullion dealers like Cookson or mastermelts. Cookson has a non trade price they offer
(Currently £18/g for 9ct)

Yeah get it sent back. £500 for 40g of 9ct is way too low. At current gold prices you should be looking at closer to £800 to £900 from a decent buyer.
Cash for gold postal services are notorious for low offers, they rely on people not knowing the actual melt value. Check gold selling guide first so you know exactly what your gold is worth and where to sell it for a fair price.
