Cancel an Apnea overnight Sleep Study I've waited for since Nov 21 due to a cough ??

I've been waiting on an overnight sleep study for apnea since Nov 21.
I've been dx with it in the past. I then lost a lot of weight & was told this 'would cure it'. I was not able to have the new parts for my machine until I had another study to confirm I still needed it. Then covid etc so here we are. Since Nov 21.

My sleep study is tonight. I started a sore throat last Friday. I have a cough & a non mucus type cold. The cough is much worse when lying down but it's pretty frequent sitting up. I didn't get much sleep Sun night or last night. I don't think its covid as no temperature etc but you cant get tests here so I can't be 100%.

Does anyone know if this will mess up the study?
If I call them I suspect they will say 'do not attend due to cough' & I'll wait another 6m. ooof.

They wont make you wait another 6M as you are top of the list.
they should be able to rebook you for a week or so.

Call them and ask what dates they have.

when I have rebooked hospital appt they have always rearranged within 2 weeks.

Yes, cancel. Not worth having an inaccurate sleep study. You usually won't have to wait that long.

@LittleMrsPretty well if I call then I will have to wait for a call back as they offer an answer machine service only. In the past it can take ages for a call back.
So, even if I call in a responsible fashion I may not hear back & need to go in anyway ? I was just really wondering if anyone knew if the actual cough would mess up the study. bit of a niche Qu really. I have googled & it seems it may.
Clarity would mean they could offer a last min appt to someone else & also save me a 70 mile round trip if they cant do the study tonight. I just don't know whether I need to call them. Sorry, thinking out loud here.

@YomAsalYomBasal sorry my last post crossed with yours. I was wondering if the cough would make it inaccurate even if they were prepared to go ahead. iIrc last time I was just under borderline needing to notify the DVLA. I'd not want to lose my licence if the cough pushed my readings up higher than normal iyswim.
I rarely drive atm & only short distances if super alert but I do value my licence as I am disabled & rural & few buses so it is helpful for appts & emergencies.

You need to cancel. Offer to take any last minute cancellations (if at all possible) and be as apologetic and as amenable as possible.

DC3 has bi annual sleep studies and they won't see them with even "just" a cold.

YomAsalYomBasal · 25/07/2023 09:11

Yes any kind of respiratory infection could make your AHI artificially high and mean you end up with your vent on settings you don't really need etc. Sleep clinics are funny things, there might be nobody there til later today but do your bit and leave a message.

54isanopendoor · 25/07/2023 09:16

OK. I will call them, state my symptoms & see what they say.
I wanted to do the right thing anyway but I'm just gutted at having waited since Nov 21 (& actually far longer as covid meant I couldn't been seen since 2019 to renew the equipment I was given out in 2017). I feel like crying at the timing though. I hardly ever get colds (last one about 2 years ago). oof.

How frustrating for you. But it does sound like the cough will affect the study.
So that you aren't just speaking to the answer machine can you phone the main hospital switch board and ask to be put through to the dept you need or google the name of your consultant and their secretary and try and give them a ring. Then ask their advice over whether you should attend.

54isanopendoor · 25/07/2023 10:16

I called & helpfully managed to speak to the secretary.
They didn't discuss if it would affect the study but have a blanket rule re coughs. A bit grumpy: 'why didn't you call yesterday, we could've offered it to someone else') Cancelled: it can't be re-arranged by phone: a letter will come in the post.

Thanks for listening to my grumps, it's just been a frustrating 2 days.

Yesterday I had a different appt (waiting 4m). I attended the place I have been attending for 5 years. Checked in with Reception. After 35mins I asked them if they were sure that the HCP knew I was waiting. They then checked the system & said: 'oh, there is a message from them. They're working out of local health centre 4 miles away today. You're a DNA'. New appointment in Nov. Smashing.

I don't mean to grump. My cold affecting the Sleep study is no-one's fault.
And yesterdays appointment mix up is one of those things. But I'm so tired.
