Locked out of iPhone

snatchabook · 24/07/2023 20:17

My delightful children locked me out of my iPhone and it is now disabled. It says to log into icloud on another device, which I have done, but I can't find a way to unlock it. Can anyone tell me what to do? There's about a year's worth of photos on there that I can't bear to lose and they haven't backed up. Confused

You need to find the locked phone on I cloud and erase it completely. Then you should be able to open it up as a new device and restore the backup. Assuming you have a back up that is. Otherwise you’re stuffed

Even the FBI couldn't get into the iphone of that man who blew up the gay nightclub in America about 10 years ago. Sorry. They had to take apple to court to get them to tell them how to do it. Annoying but great security when you think about it.

Aposterhasnoname · 24/07/2023 20:27

Just noticed you said they aren’t backed up. Oh dear! That’s not good. Perhaps apple can help you, but I wouldn’t hold you’re breath. Are you certain the phone hasn’t automatically backed up? Don’t try the erase trick if you’ve not backed the phone up. You’ll lose everything.

I printed that out on a recent thread about Boris Johnson's phone where apparently everyone else knows a man on the market who can do it

I didn't see that thread but I definately remember it was rather embarrasing for the FBI. They should have asked mumsnetters about the man on the market lol.

Id have to look it back up but I thought that actually apple weren't made to do it, I can't remember if it was ever resolved

ChopperC110P · 24/07/2023 20:57

Just contact Apple support. So long as you can prove you are the owner of the iCloud account associated with that iPhone or you have a receipt for that iPhone from when you bought it, they can get you up and running again.

Apple won in court against the FBI because they were telling the truth. They cannot hack an iPhone. They have prioritised privacy and security over back door monitoring, data mining and selling their customers data unlike android.

It never got to court. The FBI claimed they had "found another way". They didn't want to get into a court fight they couldn't win, as unless the entire security industry has been compromised, the consensus is once an iPhone is locked, noone can unlock it.

(This is all going to get newsy again with the UKs new supermagic powers encryption bill)

And thats why I would never have anything other than an iphone.

Out of interest @ChopperC110P was it that Apple couldn't hack an iphone or they wouldn't?

I wonder if the FBI really did manage to get in or whether they just said they had because they were too embarresed to say otherwise.

LittleBearPad · 24/07/2023 21:05

Contact Apple.

Thats really interesting @SerendipityJane and just confirms to me why i'll never have anything other than an iphone.

OP - I'm sorry we've gone off topic a bit but you did raise a fascinating subject lol.

How did it go unlocking your phone?

Chowtime · 09/08/2023 12:33

Did you manage to unlock the phone @snatchabook ?

Icycloud · 09/08/2023 12:35
