Standardised Score?

posting here for traffic as I’m lacking patience today -

Hi just received DDs Yr 8 report and it says she scores 126 for her standardised score. I have no idea what this mean though generally I’m really happy with the report (just tells me if she’s above, in line or exceeding and if she’s paying attention in class).

if anyone could explain this score in easy terms I’d appreciate it.

100 is average, 126 is well above.

Standardisation in general is used to make scores easier to compare (e.g. across different subjects, different populations etc).

To standardise, often the mean of the original raw score is set to be 100. Therefore if you have a standardised score of 100 it means you have an average score for that test. Above 100 would be above average, below 100 below average.

So hypothetically, if a pupil had a standardised score of 100 for maths, 125 for English and 80 for science this means they performed averagely in the test relative to their peers in maths, better than average in English and worse than average in science.

@spanieleyes Thank you that’s the simplicity I need 😆now I guess I should query why in progress she is just in line and not above. It’s fine because all her teachers agree she is trying hard but I’m interested to know why the lower progress.

What was her standardised score last year? If it was lower, she has made progress, if it was higher, she hasn't.

@spanieleyes that hadn’t even occurred to me, I’ll have to find it and have a read.

If your daughter got a score of 126 last year and 126 this year, that doesn't mean she hasn't made progress. It means that in both years she did much better than average. This would suggest she is making steady progress in line with expectations. (As it would be expected in general that a child performing above average one year would still be doing the same the next year).
