Does dry shampoo not work for anybody else?

I'd love to leave my hair longer in-between washes but after 2 days it's already an oily mess! I try dry shampoo but it doesn't really seem to work and it makes my scalp itch and my hair feel awful.

I'm using Batiste at the moment and also Aldi's Living Proof dupe. I spray it on at night before bed, I don't rub it in I just leave it overnight and brush in the morning. I've tried the other way as well, doing it as directed on the can but it doesn't work any better.

What am I doing wrong!?

I use it every other day between washes but I do it on the morning, spray from around 20 cms away, rub it in and then brush out. I also use Batiste and haven't had any issues.

Sadly though, it does dry your hair out causing breakages and makes my scalp sore so I'm trying to wean myself off it

wellyouasked · 24/07/2023 10:44

I don't know if I do it correctly, but I put it on in the morning, leave it on for 30 seconds- 1 minute and then brush it out and it looks fine.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong by leaving it on overnight, but I don't think it would for me leaving it on such a short amount of time

I use arrowroot powder instead. Does the same job only less chemicals and much cheaper. Put into a spice jar with little holes in the lid to sprinkle on roots then brush through. If you do it overnight it works better and less likely to go out with white hair! You do have to brush through well.

I have fine hair and can't use the stuff. I think you have to have the right hair type, it's not for everyone!

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/07/2023 10:52

I spray it on in the morning and brush it out, can't imagine leaving it ovber night, that would make my head itch.

pinkclip · 24/07/2023 10:54

I follow a well know hair dresser on Instagram who said spraying it overnight and leaving it to do it's thing acts as a dry wash

I find it does work but not brilliantly because I have fine hair. I follow the directions on the can, but by the end of the day my hair still looks dirty. I found lockdown cured me of my washing daily habit though. I now can wear it up on day 2 and it not look too bad. I can wear it down with dry shampoo. Day 3 I need to wash it!

Gwenhwyfar · 24/07/2023 10:55

Dry shampoo helps with the oily roots, but not with the whole way my hair looks the day after if you see what I mean. It doesn't make it look freshly washed.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/07/2023 10:56

Use it straight after washing and drying your hair. It stops the grease from building up does not work as well if there is already grease present.

IronCandle · 24/07/2023 10:56

It’s not supposed to be put on overnight. Just spray it on in the morning, rub in and then brush out.

mintbiscuit · 24/07/2023 10:59

Are you using a clarifying shampoo to remove it? Dry shampoo is a bugger to get out of hair. I’ve had to resort to washing up liquid in the past to effectively remove it.

I’ve decided it’s vile stuff so I’ve cut my hair to shoulder length and wash hair daily now to manage oily roots.

PennyPinkPineapple · 24/07/2023 11:19

Instead of using dry shampoo, could you do a freshen up in the shower between washes with some cleansing conditioner?

I have wavy hair that gets greasy at the roots (joy), and I can't use dry shampoo either. It makes my scalp itch, I can't brush my hair because waves + brush = frizz, I don't like the smell of it, and to be honest, it makes my hair look worse.

JaninaDuszejko · 24/07/2023 11:24

Just wash your hair as often as you need it. Washing isn't bad for your hair, although heat is, so don't blowdry. And if that's an issue change the style.

RenegadeMrs · 24/07/2023 11:27

I have fine hair and don't find it very useful for clearing the grease and it makes my head itchy as well.

On the upside though, my hair doesn't take long to style and dry, so I just do it daily/every other day. I dislike rules for your hair/skin. We are all slightly different, just do what works for you and don't over think too much.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 24/07/2023 11:29

It doesn't work at all for me. I have fine hair.

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/07/2023 12:08

Ultimately it's a powder that soaks up some of the oils in the hair so in terms of it working, I always think there's a limit to what that is going to look and feel like - it's never going to look like clean hair or feel undetectable if you aren't used to it or are sensitive to things like that.

I almost never use it and treat it as a sort of (just about, needs really must) tolerable emergency item if I've not been able to wash my hair for some reason, it looks visibly greasy and I need to be seen briefly and my hair look acceptable from a distance. I think it works for that as well as it needs to but I usually wash it out as soon as I'm able, always the same day. I think the matte effect it gives and the powdery perfumed smells are a bit of a giveaway when people do use them.

Generally I prefer to just wash my hair every day, and am generally happy to do so. I've never dyed my hair and it's reasonably healthy, it doesn't do it any visible harm and I feel much better for it.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 24/07/2023 12:12

It doesn't work for me either, I have quite fine hair. It leaves it feeling kind of thick, but not in a good way, and it feels horrible.

whatthinkyou · 24/07/2023 17:49

Try a little bit of talcum powder.

Works well.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 24/07/2023 18:12

Doesn't work on my fine blondeish hair. Just feels like an itchy, greasy and slightly gritty mess. I think you do have to have the right sort of hair for it.

babayhaga · 24/07/2023 18:13

You have to rub in for a couple of minutes and use a hair dryer to blow out

Theunamedcat · 24/07/2023 18:16

Try rosemary water since I use that my hair is less greasy I don't think it does anything for hair growth tbh (early days though) but it helps cut the grease

Also makes your hair fall out

User23452 · 09/09/2023 18:09

Fine hair - it’s never made my hair look good.
I’ve had tonnes of them including the living proof one, all have been a waste of time.
