Went to see Barbie last night…

Loved the costumes and some simple laughs…

But generally, I thought the film was a bit dark and not quite what it seems.
The feminist agenda, patriarchy, Ken’s long way to empowerment were the obvious points but I have also felt that the underlying message was that we are all a bit fed up with girl power and some of us just “want to be”. Same for men - some are happy not to be masters of this world and tired of masculinity expectations. They do not know what they want anymore and they are holding on to the idea of patriarchy like a comfort blanket.

Not sure I have worded this very well early in the day but somehow instead of reinforcing feminist agenda, the film has left me confused. Is it ok not to aspire to be anything special (or only if you look like Stereotypical Barbie)?

I think you need to move on from this idea of patriarchy, it's not something that exists in today's world, not sure if it ever did. I mean, how dare those bastard men go out to work keeping the sewers clean, and how dare they not let any women work down there. And the men who refuse to let us go out and dig the ditches on the roadside, and fill all the potholes, not to mention that every single one of them are rich, powerful, have influence, one of them have to work in minimum wage jobs, none of them are unemployed or homeless. Misogynistic bastards, each and every single one.

As I said, the patriarchy just doesn't exist.

However, we have fucked over an entire generation of kids and we will have to deal with the damage.

We told them they were the most important people in the room, that they could be anything they wanted to be and if they didn't "achieve" their God like status, it was someone else's fault, not theirs. All they had to do was participate, christ! we even gave them medals for it!

Everybody can't be rich and famous and live in mansions and drive supercars. If they were, we wouldn't know who was famous, and there wouldn't be anyone doing "ordinary" jobs to supply the glitterati with their mansions or cars. You can't buy something if nobody is making it, no factory workers, no supercars.

I think being "ordinary" is normal, it's healthy, but telling children that it's not OK to just be OK is what's causing all the problems.

That movie was awful.

Er, did you bang your head?

The patriarchy is alive and kicking

Malarandras · 24/07/2023 08:58

Try telling women and girls in Afghanistan that the patriarchy ‘just doesn’t exist’. Let us know how you get on.

What. The. Fuck.

Riiiiiight?? What am I reading????

Milk2SugarsAndAShotOfYourFinestValium · 24/07/2023 09:24

I liked the movie and it was largely what I expected with Greta Gerwig as writer/director. I was surprised by all the under 12s in cinema given rating as obvs it’s not some brainless Barbie romp. I think reviews have over-egged it a bit but there were some real laughs and Ryan Gosling is brilliant.

That said I’m sick of seeing Barbie everywhere and the marketing machine is now ruining it all for me.

MrsMiddleMother · 24/07/2023 09:48

You need to put spoiler in the title for a start and yabu! The film highlights the fact that Barbie is the idea that girls and women can be ANYTHING they want. Literally from president to an ordinary person. I loved the film and don't think it was 'dark' at all, it was honest and true to how women are treated in the real world and how Barbie was used to manipulate women to be a certain way instead of what she was created for; to inspire.

Now I'm wondering how much they paid you to post that, therefore making me go off and do it Grin

lolll

Me too 😆

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 24/07/2023 09:59

I went to see it last night. I had zero expectations. It was fun, well done, quirky. It's not going to go on my list of best films ever made, but it was still a great watch for a Sunday night.

I thought all the pink and pastels would make me feel a bit sick, but actually I got into it.

throwbacko2 · 24/07/2023 10:05

@MrsMiddleMother

Why does it need a spoiler?

As if a thread about the seeing Barbie movie last night isn't obviously going to be discussing what was seen Confused

DottyLottieLou · 24/07/2023 10:17

Totally agree re the kids.

I was planning on seeing it - because I wanted a happy fun movie. But given all the reviews (from the various internet people rather than the paid shills) I’m now planning to give it a miss. I loved my Barbies and I don’t want to ruin the memories.

It is a happy and fun film. I laughed hard throughout it. Go and make your own mind up. I absolutely loved it

@onefinemess what on earth are you talking about

WildUnchartedWaters · 24/07/2023 12:58

@NotAnotherMojito I'm surprised thats all you took from it.

I think you need to move on from this idea of patriarchy,

That's exactly what the patriarchy would say.

Of all the nonsense I read on here the post by onefinemess might just be the most ridiculous.

CaramelMac · 24/07/2023 13:01

It was watchable but it could have been so much better, it could’ve had many more laugh out loud bits and the songs weren’t as good as they should have been, all in all it felt like they had compressed the storyline and it was a bit rant-y towards the end, but I bet their marketing will be studied in universities up and down the land for decades to come!

The whole point of the songs is that they were without meaning.

America ferreras monologue was outstanding.

Ranty?

You're "not sure" patriarchy exists or ever did?

Have you been at the laudanum again, milady?

Guineapigwoes · 24/07/2023 13:03

Loved it. Took my 10 year old niece and she came out asking lots of questions about the patriarchy which is not a bad thing and definitely exists.

I work in Tech, women make up less than 25% of our workforce in our company - the patriarchy is alive and kicking
