Will a handheld clothes steamer change my life though??

Will it though? I was given an Amazon voucher for my birthday. It's between a suitcase and a steamer. Both circa £40.

I am very lazy and often creased. I also have lots of clothes which are risky to iron. So does dd2 as we keep buying things from Vinted made of flimsy fabric.

The steamer looks more fun that a case which I also need but not until autumn.

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for clothes steamer recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best clothes steamers page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful.

I bloody love mine! I don’t even own an iron anymore. I steam the uniforms in two minutes on the morning, I do it when they’re hung up so don’t even take them off the hanger. One of the best things I ever bought (after the spider hoover)

continentallentil · 23/07/2023 19:28

@TaylorTickets ooh I have been thinking about getting one - which one do you have?

Suspific · 23/07/2023 19:34

Do it!

I've had this one since Christmas and I love it! Forgot to iron/steam a PE t-shirt. Done in less than a minute.

Right. Does it do the exact same thing as an iron? But hand held?
Or what?

taybert · 23/07/2023 19:53

I am also lazy and oft creased. I put stuff on hangers to dry then if they’re still creased I whizz over with the steamer. I have a heatproof mat hanging in the back of the utility room door and a hanger hook thing. Don’t have an ironing board any more. It’s ace!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 23/07/2023 19:54

I couldn't say if it will make your life better. It will make it steamier though.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 23/07/2023 19:56

On the down side though, it might encourage you to sing 'steam' by east17 around the house, which can become addictive and send your life spiralling downhill like a fluffy hooded anorak (which can't be steamed, by the way).

Twite · 23/07/2023 19:56

Ok I've been here before, with rash Mumsnet-inspired purchases which turned out to be less than impressive (steam mop), so I will approach this with a degree of side-eye, but.....can a steamer cope with cotton shirts that are creased? Not crumpled-in-a-ball creased but washed and dried on a hanger kind of creased? If so I will get one.

Twite · 23/07/2023 19:58

Oh I knew I shouldn't have clicked on Suspific's link.....40%off...getting serious finger twitch here

Twite · 23/07/2023 20:02

hmmm just cross checked prices and Amazon lies....it's cheaper elsewhere

User6424678852 · 23/07/2023 20:05

But is it really any different to just using a steam iron without the ironing board?

oldoldieoldieold · 23/07/2023 20:06

I'm following with interest ask hate ironing but really want some linen clothes!

Herefornames · 23/07/2023 20:08

Honestly they’re not worth the hype, it’s nothing like an iron and gets out minimal creases. I bought a fairly decent one too! It remains in the cupboard.

Orangello · 23/07/2023 20:12

I have one of those for travelling, as even business hotels don't seem to have irons as standard any more. it does the job, but no it won't get linen or even thick cotton as smooth as a proper iron. It is however, so much easier than ironing, and it's fabulous for freshening up stuff you can't iron, like sweaters or beaded delicate garments.

This is what I suspected 😄 how disappointing

SnoopyDoopy1 · 23/07/2023 20:14

I bought one but think it's rubbish!

pastypirate · 23/07/2023 21:18

The linked one is £10 cheaper than what I was considering.

For clarity I won't be trying to flatten any cotton shirts with it. My issue is jumpsuits I'm scared to iron that I hang in the bathroom when everyone showers to get the creases out. Sometimes takes days!!

I love my steamer but I looked through a lot of reviews before purchasing and it does seem that the more power your steamer has the better. However if your main task is going to be flimsy fabrics even a basic model should manage, it's when you get to thicker cottons that you need more oomph.

I absolutely hate ironing and always manage to iron even more creases into things but the steamer is really quick and easy. If you are going to regularly have a pile of shirts and assorted laundry to get creases out of you're probably best to stick to a normal iron but if, like me, you avoid ironing at all costs and just need to quickly freshen up one or two things at a time then a steamer is a dream.

pastypirate · 24/07/2023 00:27

@cavebaby definitely nothing like a cotton shirt I don't even own one! The kids schools shirts are non iron I can't be arsed with heavy ironing!

I love mine. If you want crisp shirts you still need an iron but it's great for stopping me look like I've slept in my clothes . Mine was 20 quid from Asda.

mondaytosunday · 24/07/2023 00:46

Yes! My son works at a men's clothing shop and uses a steamer there and only uses that at home (and is a clotheshorse so always looks good).

Oh interesting that's a sort of multi level recommendation! Thank you that's really helpful

I bought one and thought it was rubbish too. We’ve given up on it already.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 24/07/2023 01:24

I love mine. I use it in everything now. Only an amazon cheapie but I wear a lot of linen and it works well on them. Also my sons shirts for work if their hanging up ready to iron.
