Do you have Starlink Internet? Is it good?

Hi all!

I'm thinking of moving somewhere where there's no broadband. Starlink seems like the only option so just wanted to know if anybody has it and whether it's any good?

I work from home so I'd need it to be relatively stable for that. Heavy internet use in our house would constitute me on my laptop working and my partner watching something on Netflix at the same time. Would Starlink be okay for that?

I subscribe to Which? and have just had a look on there. This provider isn't mentioned. Have you put your postcode in to check all available providers?

MrsKwazi · 23/07/2023 09:45

Yes it is amazing. Literally plug and play, we were online 20 minutes after the box arrived. We have the business version. I can’t offer any other advice as DH is the tech wizard and me the dinosaur, but I’ve been super impressed so far.

EightMonthsScared · 23/07/2023 09:50

@RampantIvy Starlink is owned by Tesla. It's linked to the starlink satellites. I'm thinking of moving abroad to a place with poor broadband coverage so Starlink might be the only option there.

@MrsKwazi ooh that's good to hear! So no issues with multiple users simultaneously?

Yes, get an average of 150 down and 15 up. Use it for home Business, wife working from home and streaming/gaming.

Cuts out now and then in bad weather, but not for long.

Best internet had in a long while. Use to have BT, deffo won’t look back.

RampantIvy · 23/07/2023 09:55

That's far better than our speeds @RH1234. I will go and have a look at their website.

macshoto · 23/07/2023 09:57

Yes. Bought on their recent £99 rural offer.

200 down and 40 up not unusual. Reduced slightly in cases of rain.

Does need a clear arc of the sky to track the satellites across. In the UK Midlands that's looking pretty much due South - but in other locations it may be in a different direction.

Latency is pretty good - 30-40ms - but there can be occasional short <2s outages which might upset gamers.

I was looking at it for DD, but the costs are prohibitive £75 per month and £449 for a router.

It's really designed for places that don't have an alternative for internet, or for mobile users in locations where there may not be 4/5G coverage. It's not designed to compete with a regular ISP.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/07/2023 10:02

Relatives in rural Ireland have it. Pricey, but reliable. They say that there is occasionally a lag which isn't weather related and possibly due to the signal switching between satellites.

RampantIvy · 23/07/2023 10:03

Ah, I see @macshoto. Anyway, I have learned something new today.

bert3400 · 23/07/2023 10:09

We've just bought it . We live in a holiday resort and in the summer months our normal internet dips completely and as we need it for work, so we took the plunge. Doing a great deal in Europe atm €199 and €65 per month . Brilliant to hear its so fast

That's where I'm thinking of moving to so that's good to hear!

@macshoto I am getting 16 down and 0.1 up on a regular basis paying not much less than that on a BT line, and I am almost inside the M25 - so might be competitive for me! They don't even have a date for fibre to be run in our area, it's a complete joke. I have better Internet in holiday lets in rural cornwall with fibre to the home than I do near London.

They got it during the pandemic when everyone was at home and it became apparent their previous broadband wasn't up to the job. They pay three times what we do in the UK.

I know that experience well. My flat - in walking distance of Canary Wharf - got really slow speeds until Hyperoptic provided fibre to the building. I still think BT doesn't have FTTC (even) in that central London location.

Xiaoxiong · 23/07/2023 16:23

@macshoto I just checked openreach for my postcode - we can apparently expect fibre to the cabinet sometime between now and December 2026. It would be ridiculous to have to pay for satellite broadband considering how central we are but I am seriously considering it.

Crazycrazylady · 23/07/2023 18:19

We have it and it's excellent . My Speedtest Ap bow goes all the way to the end.
We're ages away from fibre so it was a great option for us
