Just been to see the Barbie film and iI got to wondering what “ordinary” Barbie would actually be like and what “ordinary” means to me.

Kim Kardashian has psoriasis doesn't she? I think it's under control but I'm sure I've seen pics of her where it has flared up.

Harrythehappypig · 22/07/2023 22:37

I saw it mentioned once in an interview but have never seen any pictures

Didn't Kim K rob some of Kourtneys breast milk Ro help her psoriasis, and Kendall had acne as a teen/early 20's- whilst she was a model.

They were celebrities already where they not?

It's called airbrushing. Sure models have veins and cellulite and spots and uneven skin tone.
Kim Kardashian controls her image, she will not show anything she doesn't want you to see. It's why they have a 'glam' team.

Do catwalk models have varicose veins?

OP posts:
Harrythehappypig · 22/07/2023 22:46

One of my DC is 17 and has had varicose veins for 4 years now. I don’t think she’s going to see that reflected in a picture of acceptable femininity any time soon. Luckily she’s not too bothered (has to wear a v short skirt to play the team sport she’s obsessed with). I can see more veins appearing on the same leg and on the other leg, I don’t know if she’s noticed yet. My younger DC will be devastated if she develops them as she is way more bothered about such things.

I have seen models with vitiligo and albinism, as well as overweight models, but never models with conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

I'm an overweight woman, and it can be very difficult to visualise what a garment modelled by a size 8 woman will look like on me. While it's nice to see your reality and challenges reflected, models are about dreams, not reality. So I can't imagine models with visible, painful conditions will ever become mainstream. But wouldn't it be wonderful if people like that appeared more in films and on TV.

AnnaMagnani · 22/07/2023 22:49

I think the fashion industry likes vitiligo as the models are very striking and for catwalk they are looking for that kind of look.

However a big red plaque of flaking skin - not so much although that would be diversity too!

Harrythehappypig · 22/07/2023 22:50

I think anything flaking or involving pus won’t be appearing any time soon

You def don’t see varicose veins a lot. I’ve had them since I was a teenager

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/07/2023 10:33

They use then sometimes from what DB (ex photographer, fashion) says but it can be more hard work for the retouch photos people.

Catwalk models can have awful skin, seen lots with acne not sure about eczema etc.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. I had them at the age of 12 (now 50) but everyone tells me I must be mistaken as I couldn’t possibly have had them so young. You’ve reassured me that I’m not imagining things.

PretendUsername · 23/07/2023 15:42

I've had massive varicose veins and multiple cases of phlebitis since I was 14 but the doctors still think I don't qualify for surgery, the NHS views it all as cosmetic. I'm actually most concerned about the throbbing pain and small blood clots far more than wearing shorts again but the arseholes won't take me seriously.

It would be nice to see the condition a bit more in the wild, I suspect most people with protruding leg veins tend to cover them up which is a shame. The more people expose others to differences the less shocking those differences become.

I blame the pill I took for acne (dianette). The veins popped up not long after taking it and I feel duped by the doctor who said it was "as rare as hens teeth" and I needn't worry about those pesky side effects. Well, here we are.

xsquared · 23/07/2023 15:47

Doesn't Cara Delavigne have psoriasis?

Cameron Diaz has been known to suffer from acne, and even quoted that being a reason why she wasn't present at some red carpet event.

Quisisana · 23/07/2023 16:02

We were talking about this the other day! Varicose veins are just never going to be acceptable imo. Shame as I have loads! I came across a model who has lymphodema (?) so one leg considerably larger than the other. She models with brightly coloured compression bandages - but she is also stunning. I think varicose veins are too linked to old age and ill health to be acceptable mainstream.

If they are actual varicose veins then of course she has noticed!

Harrythehappypig · 23/07/2023 17:19

the new ones? They are only noticeable in strong sunlight at the moment and she hasn’t mentioned it. The ones she’s had for ages are so noticeable my paramedic friend who I haven’t seen for years asked me if that’s what they were. She just gets on with it but she won’t be overjoyed if they get worse on the other leg.

Harrythehappypig · 23/07/2023 17:20

Can you have non “actual”
varicose veins? I have loads, didn’t realise there was more than one type.

OP posts:
Quisisana · 23/07/2023 19:46

I thought you might be confusing them with broken capillaries. I do not see how you could see her varicose veins but she couldn't? They're pretty noticeable.

Me too. My mother took me to a vascular surgeon for an opinion at the age of 16

Harrythehappypig · 23/07/2023 20:10

The varicose veins I have look nothing like the many broken capillaries I also have. DD doesn’t seem to have the latter (yet) but she often wears shorts despite the very noticeable varicose veins on one calf and I noticed the other day in strong sunlight there seemed to be some bulging on the other leg and in a different place on the front of the original one. I hadn’t noticed before. Mine are both legs, above and below the knee so no reason why hers won’t be different unfortunately. I may also now have a lovely one in my groin which the GP thought was a hernia but the consultant thinks as is just above some bulging veins in my thigh is almost definitely a varicose vein (he gave it a different name but said that’s what is means - ultrasound this week to confirm it). If confirmed he said the best thing to do is just leave it, it won’t do any harm. My days of high cut swimsuits - had they every started - are most definitely over…

Nope I remember my first boyfriend asking me what they were and I’d had them a long time then. My mum has them. They’re hereditary

Quisisana · 24/07/2023 11:43

You can have quite prominent veins without thembeing varicose. If they work well (as veins) then it probably makes sense to leave them. I've had two removed because they were affecting my movement but others seem to be popping up!
