I had a lower molar out on Wednesday. A good clot formed at the time and all seemed ok. Today (Saturday) I've just checked and no clot is there! I don't know when it went but maybe today as I ate some chips cos I couldn't cope with more soup.
It's not hurting at the moment...yet...
What can I do to stop dry socket? Predictably it's the weekend and my dentist won't be open until monday

I've been very gently rinsing with salt water since Thursday as directed by the dentist

It looks like it's healing normally to me.

Oh I do hope so! It's only been three days though, I thought the clot was supposed to stay on longer than that.

Believe me you would know instantly if you have dry socket….

Tittyfilarious81 · 22/07/2023 17:53

@Twite mine looked like that and it was healing just fine

GigiAnnna · 22/07/2023 17:56

Mine was the same, the white you can see is new skin tissue. x

BakedTattie · 22/07/2023 17:56

When I got dry socket the pain never ever went away, or looked like yours. The pain is indescribable so you will know if you have dry socket.

LatteLady · 22/07/2023 17:57

Nope, you would know by now and that is not the way a dry socket happens.

StressedCats · 22/07/2023 17:58

Also had a molar out on Wednesday- mine is also white/grey looking now rather than the initial red! I’m managing on paracetamol so assuming I’d be in agony if it was a dry socket!

SquigglyOne · 22/07/2023 17:58

Dental nurse here! That looks okay to me - keep up with the salt water rinses. You’ll know instantly if you get dry socket

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 18:02

I have had several teeth out and that looks like it's healing nicely but carry on being careful

Twite · 22/07/2023 18:05

This sounds hopeful. It does feel a bit sore since I've started worrying about dry socket...I hope that is just coincidence!

That white stuff is granulation tissue. It forms over the blood clot. You want it there, don't disturb it. The clot is still in place from the looks of it, the new granulation tissue forms to protect it while it heals and the clot is reabsorbed, it shouldn't ideally come out at all. But it's still there in that picture.

If you'd lost the it you'd be in agony by now as there's no way to stop dry socket, you either have it or you don't. If it's a very recent extraction the dentist may jab it with something to make it bleed again and hope it formed a new clot but you can't prevent it once the clot is gone, its instant. You don't have it though.

Try and go easy on it a few more days before eating anything hard, sticky or pointy like chips. Dry socket after 7 days is unlikely as the socket heals from the bottom up so once the new tissue grows over the bottom of the socket, no bone is exposed.

Phew, this is very helpful, thanks 👍
