How should I go about reporting this - child injured by parent?

Today I witnessed an adult purposely hurt their child. I want to report but not sure how.
Do I call the police?
I do not know their name or address. All I know is where they were at the time and what they looked like. There was cctv too.

I once reported to local police. Didn't know name or anything. Actually went there, gave a testimony, they reviewed cctv and kept me up to date. If you take it seriously they will too. You should report op. You never know otherwise and we should all do our best to protect children.

Report what you saw to the police op, up to them whether to follow-up.

We all need to play a part in calling out abuse, we can't stand back and do nothing just because we didn't 'feel comfortable.' Abuse is uncomfortable but mostly for the victim, who in this case was a powerless child.

Yes report. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Don’t leave it to anyone else.
Report it and it will be looked into. It doesn’t necessarily mean the child will be removed but they will be on the radar of children’s services who can make the judgement.

This needs the police, not the NSPCC 😵‍💫 FFS!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/07/2023 19:19

Do you know them? Can you identify them to the police?

I would report to the police, especially if there was CCTV in place.
I'm confused though. A bruise doesn't show up immediately. Where were you? A shop? A cafe? If it was a public place there must have been witnesses? You say, 'when mum returned,' so I presume you were in the place for some time. (I'm thinking breastfeeding in a cafe maybe?) Didn't anyone else say anything at the time?

In a similar situation, I have shouted oi stop that I saw it, and so did the CCTV. Because the reality of the situation is, nothing is going to happen. Whoever you report it to literally all you can do is try and defend the child in the moment. But then equally, I worry did I make it worse?

Refer directly to Children's Services MASH department and the police. It will cause delay if you go to the NSPCC as they then have to refer onto the LA.
