To butter or not to butter?

Do you butter crackers before adding cheese?

My husband and I can't agree. I suppose it's down to personal taste but I wondered what the consensus is.

I'm just intrigued by the suggestive biscuit.

DH has just asked me what I'm laughing at so I told him and now we're having a ridiculous conversation about levels of suggestiveness among a variety of biscuits, bourbons are apparently filthy Grin

Suggestive digestive was the advertising in ?1970s. Always known as "suggestives" in my parent's house.

Actually googling it tells me the "suggestive digestive" may have been for Breakaway. None the less, digestives were called suggestives in our house!

Definitely personal taste, and also depends on the type of cracker and cheese. Not something you need to agree with anyone else about.

Always butter for me but I have this weird thing where I can't have anything touching bread/crackers/scones etc if there isn't butter on it first.

It physically makes me shudder and feel queasy at the thought of putting something on any of those things without butter first. I have no idea why. Even if I'm making a sandwich with something soft like cream cheese or mayonnaise there needs to be butter first.

There's a certain amount of sense to it, especially if the sandwiches aren't going to be eaten immediately. The butter seals the surface of the bread with a thin layer of solid fat, so that the cream cheese/mayo/tomato juices/other wet components don't soak into the bread and make it soggy.

But then, I've heard Americans say that they don't butter bread for sandwiches at all, ever, and that they find it weird that we do 😅 And as far as I know, they often use similar ingredients to us, things like mayo, sliced tomato, etc., so maybe there are other ways to get round this problem? (I mean, I'm sure there must be individual Americans who do butter bread for sandwiches, and maybe some regional variations in such a large and diverse country, but on the whole, it's apparently just Not A Thing.) I suppose you should maybe avoid ordering sandwiches in the US, to avoid unnecessary bread distress… 😅

It depends on the cracker. Cream crackers, Cornish wafers or butter puffs and the like - butter and cheese. Carr's Melts, olive crackers, chilli crackers etc - just cheese. I'm off to see what's in the cupboard ...

@off Thankfully the last time I was in the US and I bought a deli sandwich it did have butter in it! There was also about 2 inches worth of meat and it lasted me around 3 days with the size of it.

Although speaking of the US, I do have one exception that I'm not as bad with. Burgers on a bun. But it has to be a burger bun and lightly toasted. If I'm at a barbecue and someone has normal rolls and no butter it makes me feel weird, but I think the grease from the burger tends to help me a little there at least so I can eat them.

When I met DH he used to always butter a roll on one side only, he does both sides now because of me. 😁

Americans often seem to use the mayo instead of butter. With the result that I've seen an actual recipe for cucumber sandwiches because butter has to be explicitly stipulated as a vital component.

Perhaps America is being won over to buttered sandwiches, state by state?! Or the particular Americans I heard opining over the weirdness of butter in sandwiches were themselves the weird ones there, and in reality Americans in general are no less buttery than Brits.

Mayo instead of butter is okay if you're eating them straight away, I suppose.

No! I like to take the cheese out of the fridge before if I'm eating it with crackers so it's softer, and a like chutney too so will put that on the cracker first😋
