Accessing Audio books for DS

timefornewme2023 · 21/07/2023 12:43

Probably a really dim question but how can I access audiobooks for my DS (10) without an audible subscription?
His teacher has recommended it as we cannot get him reading regularly.

Any ideas ?

Just trying to avoid another subscription right now if possible!

Max Crumbly series of 3 books about kid stuck in a school locker and trying to stop some thief’s.

DS has started getting a comic (The Phoenix) delivered weekly. It's £1 for the first episodes to see if he likes it. It's short and a quick read but he likes getting it in the post.

Boy and Going Solo are Roald Dahl's autobiographies about being a child and young man. I loved them when I his age.

Why can't he read non-fiction?

DD was an excellent reader skill wise but disliked actually reading fiction, winners were things like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, anything by David Baddiel, Artemis Fowl and the Percy Jackson series.

Shes a teen now and enjoyed Sherlock and Roald Dahls short stories and is slowly getting through Skullduggery but she has ASD she enjoyed reading more when I read to her and has a love for language as a tool and listening to Shakespeare and musical theatre but actually reading a novel not so much, she just doesn't enjoy long stories and devours non-fiction instead.

Thanks for the ideas I am noting all of them and will keep trying until we find something.
He has read 8 pages of riddles at the dinner table tonight - even this counts as success.

I am happy with fiction or non - he reads neither consistently/ with much enthusiasm.
I felt as if he needs to get hooked on a story to drive the momentum and increase the amount he reads.
I am pushing it as it seems to be impacting on,his attainment at school he can't write as well as he should and I feel this is a missing piece of the jigsaw.

The library - see if they have the borroxbox app which has audio books

Thanks I have done this on recommendations earlier in the thread - the only issue was lots of the books aren't available for month on end so I am now trying out audible for a month.

We use cd audiobooks for my 5yr old and 3yr old. The CDs are very cheap on ebay

Ohmylovejune · 26/07/2023 20:24

My son is dyslexic so qualified to.join Listening Books. They do downloads now - back in my son's time we ordered CDs through the post!

It's a charity and the fee is very low. I still.pay now to support its charitable work.

DS9 has an Alexa speaker and I download books on audible for him. Works well!

Thanks this is a good reminder we used to get it but he didn't show much interest but I may try again now he is older!

A different tactic but how about getting him to enjoy books for referencing. A cookery or baking book for him to choose recipes to make each week, bird/plant/mushroom identification book for being outdoors, Adam Kay's body book for anatomy.
Maybe choosing a topic to research and then using it for an activity or trip. (We did a fantastic Great Fire of London trip after learning all about it and Samuel Pepys).

It's an old series now but A Series of Unfortunate Events are small enough to not be overwhelming, but interesting enough to want to read the next instalment.

Thanks @DoughnutDreams we have this whole series as my older DD devoured them !
They read the first one at school as well so it's a good shout will add to my list.
