Come Dine With Me

In the summer the kids (14 and 12), my husband and I are all having a go at come dine with me amongst us. I need a two course dinner and an evening entertainment/activity. Possibly even a theme. If you were going on come dine with me what would you do? Yes I'm shamelessly looking for ideas 🙈

what kind of food do you all like ?

BeverleyMacker · 20/07/2023 16:46

I'd do an 80s themed one Inc dress up.

BorneoBound · 20/07/2023 16:48

We're all very different so anything goes. DH loves fresh eating and is vegetarian. DD is also veggie, her favourite dinner is pasta. DS loves all things meat and fish, and spicy food. I'm more of a home comforts kind of person - love most things on a pub classics menu.

Maybe do a 70s one.

Cheese and pineapple on sticks in a hedgehog. To go with drinks first.

Prawn cocktail or stiffed vol au vonts

Coronation chicken or coq au van

Veinetta or angel delight

MargosMangos · 20/07/2023 17:42

individual mediterranean vegetable tarts with a small salad and balsamic vinegar to start
Mary Berrys fish gratin with mangetout
lemon syllabab for pudding?

MargosMangos · 20/07/2023 17:43

You can prepare them all before hand and just boil the mt when you want it

dudsville · 20/07/2023 17:46

What a fabulous idea! I don't have any novel ideas but you sound like a fun family!

MermaidEyes · 20/07/2023 17:49

I have no idea because I hate cooking but Come Dine with Me is one of my favourite programmes. Please tell me you've hired Dave Lamb to come and narrate in your dining room 😆

FoodFann · 20/07/2023 17:52

Goats cheese and roasted veg puff pastry tarts with balsamic glaze. Some spicy prawns for DH on the side!

Melt in the middle choc pudding with cream/ice cream.

Entertainment: a silly game like ‘pie face’

Housenoob · 20/07/2023 17:53

Mexican night!! So many healthy/veggie options as well as meat and spicy. Enchiladas, nachos etc. You could do lots of different mexican tapas?

Margarita cocktails for you and DH, virgin ones for the kids.

Pinata as entertainment? Play mexican music etc.

I can't wait for my family to be old enough to do stuff like this! Although are the 14 and 12 year olds going to have to do their own nights???

AdaColeman · 20/07/2023 18:26

Greek themed night, very easy to do with vegetarian dishes such as spanakopita or stuffed aubergine, and then add grilled lamb chops or fish such as sea bass for the omnivores. Greek salad and Greek roast potatoes for sides.
Meze of dips etc to start, little filo pastry nut & honey Baklava cakes to finish.

For your entertainment you could have some Greek music and try Greek dancing.

Sounds amazing!
I love CDWM.

I have no idea food wise but all I have to say is
”what a sad little life Jane” 😆😂

MaidOfSteel · 20/07/2023 18:43

How about a war-time theme where you have victory rolls in your hair and make the best, tasiest meal possible from some very basic ingredients, plus maybe a few spices & add-ons.

BorneoBound · 20/07/2023 20:04

Thank you all so much for replying, some great ideas for me to work with ☺️ for the poster who asked, yes 12 and 14 year olds are doing a night themselves. Neither are cooking virgins, and either me or DH can jump in to help if they find the time management a challenge, but they'll have to plan and shop for it by themselves - DH is a chef so they have been shown how to cook from quite young. Both are fantastic bakers (12yo did blueberry muffins today because she was bored and they were brill / 14yo does the best focaccia bread).

When we did it I did Mexican night with sombreros. DD won with a vegetarian Lebanese night. Was delicious.

Housenoob · 20/07/2023 20:21

That's amazing @BorneoBound , wasn't being judgemental at all, I think it's a great way to learn lots of skills like time management and preparation etc. Great that they can already cook some lovely things too. Hope the nights go well! Will be interested to know which menu/themes end up being chosen.

rickaaaayyyy · 20/07/2023 23:13

Mexican all the way! Although I don't agree with PP about it being healthy.

Scrap that for one night, go to town with the treats and have fun! What a lovely idea.

GettingStuffed · 20/07/2023 23:31

Starter, chilli feta, basically a spicy tomato sauce that you pour over cold feta.

Main imam biyaldi, it's a vegetarian aubergine dish

Desert get my son to make some brownies for you and serve with homemade ice-cream
