What do you do on your day off whilst DC at school?

I work 4 days a week. Youngest DC starting school in Sept so for the first time in years I'll be getting a day to myself each week. I have loads of things in the house I've wanted to do for ages but not had the time, but also I'm looking forward to relaxing!

What do you do on your day off?

I work 3 days, & have 2 days off when DC are at school.
One day I do the food shop, & a bit of cleaning/tidying. On my other day it varies - at present it's either PTA stuff (I'm the Chair & this term is one of our busiest) or sorting stuff in the house (selling DCs old clothes/toys), gardening, cleaning, & occasionally relaxing!
Tbh my work days are more relaxing than my off days.

I am a stay at home parent to 6, but I clean and tidy the house, walk the dogs, laundry, food shops, sometimes cook that night's dinner. I make sure I have at least an hour and a half to watch TV or read a book before I go to collect them from school.

I used to have a day to be me, I’d go to the gym after school drop off then I’d do something I enjoyed, lunch out, cinema, gaming essentially anything that was a bit of a pain to do with a four year old. I wasn’t having a day off to do unpaid work at home. Then I got a boyfriend who had flexitime, so he started dropping most of Fridays so we could do stuff together.

I have just gone back full time. My advice to you is to do the household stuff outside of this day. Actually do something you want to do. Climb a mountain, go golfing, open water swimming, volunteer at a hedgehog hospital. Do not waste this day shopping and cleaning - maybe do an hour of boring life shite but generally, the time is yours.

I have two days off per week as I work three days (Tue-Thu). To be honest the school days go very quickly but there's definitely time to get lots done and still relax.

Monday day off tends to be:

Gym immediately after school drop off
Home for a shower and put some laundry on
Lunch
Food shop
Home to pack away the food shopping and put the laundry away.
By that time it's time for school pick up but I feel like I've got a lot done.

Friday day off is:

Gym immediately after school drop off
Home for a shower
Longer "lunch break" - either having a coffee with a friend or just chilling and watching some TV at home.
I go to school for 2pm instead of 3.20pm to do some voluntary listening to children read and then I'm already at school to pick up DDs at home time.

Usually some sort of food shop. I had been trying to do some walking or otherwise move about a bit but that has fallen by the wayside. Had an eye test today, I do less cleaning or tidying than I should really - generally try to find a balance between doing stuff that needs doing for the family and doing stuff to look after me.

By the way , 9-3pm goes so fast and there'll be more to do than you have time for - I always feel mildly disappointed at 2.30 that it's nearly the end of my quiet time.

Day off? I wish...

mynameiscalypso · 20/07/2023 16:38

I work 4 days a week but when DS starts school, I'm changing to do 3 full days and 2 half days with some flexibility about how I use the hours depending on what's going on at work. Right now, my only plan is to use the spare time to sleep

BrutusMcDogface · 20/07/2023 16:39

Starting September I’ll have two such days a week. I think I’ll spend one of the days catching up on teacher homework, and the other tidying and cleaning 🙄

Reading this thread though, has made me think that I should have some time doing something for me.

xxalhxx · 20/07/2023 16:41

If I was you just relax have some self care and take time for yourself Because you matter too the house work can wait lol xoxo

popandchoc · 20/07/2023 17:14

I used to do a gym class but sadly the gym shut down and haven't joined another.

Now I clean the house so i didn't have to spend the weekend doing it and I also do things like hair/nail appointments etc, basically have a bit of me time.

calmcoco · 20/07/2023 17:24

I've had a day off each week for many years. I do whatever I like! Over the years I've done nothing, had lie ins, done volunteering, done a second job, done house stuff, cared for relatives, done a class, done hobbies, socialised.

Enjoy your time off! Do whatever feels right at the time and DON'T FEEL GUILTY!

Newshoess · 20/07/2023 17:26

Snap I always have 1 week day during the week. I usually food shop and do cleaning/washing. I work weekends too... I would love to work 3 shifts during the week because 1 day isn't enough off during the week.

If I'm really tired though I sometimes just do the school run and relax as its very much needed!

ginsparkles · 20/07/2023 17:27

I do mainly boring mundane things so that our weekends can then have less of the chores in them. But on top of that I go horse riding, walk my dog, meet my friends for coffee, lunch or walks.

reluctantbrit · 20/07/2023 17:30

Appointments
"life admin"
Shopping, groceries and other things
yoga
non-stop laundry if the weather is good
a nap
going back to bed with tea and a book
meeting friends for a coffee after drop off

I have a cleaner.

DanceMumTaxi · 20/07/2023 17:35

I work 3 days. So I my days off I do school drop off/pick up, food shopping, housework etc and I try and see my mum too. I also do some school work (teacher) because it means I don’t have to do it on the weekend. I check my work email about 4 times a day and respond to urgent stuff, then do planning and marking.
