Would you pay someone to reseal your bath?

You know, the white stuff around the edge? Mine is absolutely minging and going black so it needs to be done. I've tried to do it myself numerous times but I'm just making it look bloody worse! I'm not the best at DIY and don't have anyone who can help, relative or partner etc. My hands / arms aren't physically strong enough to pull out the old stuff. I've tried using a knife to pull out what I can and seal with the new stuff but it is actually much harder than it looks and I just end up with numb hands! Even squeezing it out of the bottle is hard. It seems like such a basic thing to pay a tradesman for though, they'll probably laugh at me!

Should be buying bathroom sealant that has an anti-fungal in it. Don’t be buying that cheaper stuff for sealing your living room.

If there is mould behind/under your sealant you do need to treat it after taking out the old sealant and before caulking in the new sealant.

Yes I would. Mine is a bath/shower and when I did it myself it leaked. Something to do with the weight in the bath when I showered depressing the bath sides leaving a small gap for water to access.

Tresto · 20/07/2023 09:12

If it’s black with mould but in good condition. Then buy HG mould remover. It’s about £8. You are likely to need to give it a few goes, but if you then spray it monthly it will stay away. It stinks but it’s good stuff I have used it for years and it’s the only thing I’ve found that works.

mewkins · 20/07/2023 09:19

I'd give it a go myself first. I've done kitchens and it looks neat so I reckon I could.

caringcarer · 20/07/2023 09:58

I seem to remember you have to fill the bath with water before you do it. I'd just pay a mastic man to do it. See if you need any light bulbs changing or any other little jobs and they might do it all at once.

Got a local maintenance guy out tomorrow £40 jobs a gooden! Thanks all x

Yes. Never done it, my husband always does it, I don’t think I would manage. I have too weak arms.

DuchessOfSausage · 20/07/2023 11:54

For the sake of £40 I'd get someone in too., I do it myself, and it shows.

PrincessIntrovert · 20/07/2023 12:40

The bathroom extractor fan has packed up as well so I'll get him to sort that too 😀

I pay a handyman £40 twice yearly for c two hours work and this is one of the routine jobs. Needs doing yearly here.

Jazzybean · 20/07/2023 12:46

Yeah I would because our hasn’t been done for a few years and I have still not gotten around to it. Sometimes it’s just easier to pay someone!

Shinyandnew1 · 20/07/2023 12:52

We have! We cut out all the black stuff and made the surface ‘good’, watched You Tube videos and filled the bath first etc. We then did a truly terrible cock-up job and it looked awful!

We then paid a local chap to come and do it-he did it in about seven seconds and it looked amazing. Cheap as chips-can’t remember how much but worth every penny.

GenieGenealogy · 20/07/2023 12:53

Yes, and have done. We had someone round last year to replace all the silicone around the bath and a separate shower tray. There is clearly a market for this service, the person we used markets himself as "The Sealant Guy".

Talkingtothetrees · 20/07/2023 17:07

We paid a man to do our new en-suite when I tiled it and he also redid existing bathroom and kitchen for £100 and it looked great. Definitely a knack to it which I just could not get!

golddustwomen · 20/07/2023 17:09

Oh god, yes 10x. I tried to do it myself and made an absolute bloody mess.

Ponderingwindow · 20/07/2023 17:09

Yes, it’s not just a cosmetic task. If it’s not done properly you will get slow leaks and mold in the walls. If you don’t have the skills, don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.

fancreek · 20/07/2023 19:33

If it needs doing yearly then you're not cleaning your bathroom properly!

clouddprocess · 20/07/2023 19:35

I've done it myself with one of those sticky rolls. Very neat.

jacckandsalllly · 20/07/2023 20:06

£85 for an hour and a half?!!! I have to retrain to seal baths!!

I thought it was a little steep but when I researched it online it does seem to be the going rate, and he did do a good job!

That's trim not sealant.

WaitingForSunnyDays · 20/07/2023 07:37

Yes. I'll do all sorts of DIY, but having tried several times to do this before I'd happily pay someone now!

Same here , I can change the cistern in a toilet, wallpaper, put up shelves and curtain rails but caulking is my nemesis, I tried it a few times and it always looks like a badly iced cake !

drpet49 · 21/07/2023 19:04

jacckandsalllly · 20/07/2023 06:34

I paid £85 recently for someone to remove all the old caulk and reseal the bath.

He was here for about an hour and a half.

An hour and a half, what a joke.

mastertomsmum · 21/07/2023 19:08

I always pay people to do stuff like that, you can find a few other little sealing/cleaning type jobs at the same time to make a job of it

jotajil · 21/05/2024 11:50

I would be very surprised if you could get rid of the black mould. Easiest te memoveold sealand and put new according to instructions from somewhere. I tried and have up cos couldnt squeeze caulk thing.
3rd option: admit defeat, call a man who can and retire with a glass of wine 😀
