Being charged more

So I used to go to a hairdresser and she upped her prices from £25 to £40. This was all good and well, but I have very short hair. I get it shaved on the sides, and some taken off the top. I don’t get it washed and could sometimes be in there under an hour.

I decided to go elsewhere as I couldn’t afford £40, my hair grows pretty quick so was wanting to get in every two weeks, and to have it only shaved and trimmed, it was costing a lot. I’ve now just seen that she charges a gentleman’s cut at £20. My cut is basically a gents cut, but I’m being charged more.

My daughter has been and it cost £25. My daughter got A* service, it was washed, styled and cut beautifully. I’d have happily paid £40 as it was well worth the money.

I know if we’re going by gender, I look like a lass, so I’m classed as a lass. so would come under as “woman” but have a man’s hair cut.

The bit that got me was you saying you don't get it washed and are often in there under an hour.

If this is the case, you're not getting a gentleman's cut or anything near. As a guy, I can be in and out in ten minutes. If you're taking up to an hour, it seems only fair they charge you for a proportionally longer time.

Have you considered going to a barber?

I’m also confused by your “under an hour” statement, because that sounds quite long to me. I spend about 15 minutes. Why was your daughter only charged £25? Is this at the new hairdresser’s? Can you go to the new hairdresser for £25?

HolHello · 19/07/2023 16:12

I take DD to a barber as she has a mullet. I also used to go to a barker when I had a pixie type cut.

If you're getting it washed and styled then that's more. Men don't typically have hat done.

i do go to the barbers, now and he charges me £12 for the same cut, which takes 20 mins.

@TrueScrumptious they charged £25 as she’s a child, she can’t go where I go now as it’s a barbers and whilst I believe he could do her hair, she likes the salon experience.

Sometimes it takes a while as she will leave me to go do something else.

I have a 'woman's cut - and have a wet cut and am in and out in about 35/40 mins, so yours sounds more convoluted than mine!

ImNotGoingToDoAnyOfThat · 19/07/2023 16:15

@HolHello nope, I don’t get it washed, just sprayed with water from a bottle.

I don’t go anymore as like I said, I can’t afford, but I was just wondering if I had reason to be a little 🤷🏻‍♀️ x

£40 isn't a lot of money if its just under an hour. A hairdresser needs to pay themselves, pay their insurance, chair rental, equipment costs, sick pay, tax, holidays and pension. Hairdressers and barbers often charge children less for goodwill.

ImNotGoingToDoAnyOfThat · 19/07/2023 16:21

@Blinkinbloodyhayfever £40 isn’t a lot when you get shit loads done, I don’t get a lot done, faded and a bit off top. I like to go in every two weeks as I don’t like the shaven bit growing out too much, but the top hasn’t grown that much in that time..

You're not only paying someone for their time though - it is also the skill, the years of training courses and the equipment too (as we very much found out during lockdown when we tried to cut DS hair)
