Who knows North Wales/Snowdonia well? Where was this place I remember? Woodland car park, pine forest, little river...

I clearly remember stopping here on the way to our family holidays on the Lleyn Peninsula as a child. We lived just outside Birmingham and went there every year for a holiday, and stopped in this place several times. I'm guessing it was somewhere along the A470 as that was the route we always drove, but perhaps we turned off to get there. Fairly certain it wasn't Coed Y Brenin, as it was much quieter than that, no facilities etc. I think it was between Machynlleth and Porthmadog though.

There was just a car park in a pine forest, with a low stone wall round it. I remember there being pine needles on the ground. And then we went for a short walk through the pine trees to a small river that ran through the woods. My memory is very clear of the reddish brown floor of the pine woods giving way to this rocky river.

My parents, in typical fashion, insist they don't remember this place (I bet they do tbh but they are a bit weird like that and like to withhold info 🙄). So I'm asking MN instead... Any suggestions?

I think it is near the seat of Idris.

I was about to suggest this one!

Ooooh @Istanbulnotconstantinople72 and @Istanbulnotconstantinople72 funnily enough that was a top contender already after I spent an hour geeking out over the OS map this evening! Thanks. Will stop off there next week and see if it is The Place and report back if so.

We used to go to porthmadog a lot as a relative had a caravan there and always stopped somewhere between there and Beddgelert to splodge in a stony river, there were a lot of trees too......you've managed to bring back memories that are over 50 years old😆 can almost hear the sounds and smell it, i hope you find it, I loved it there.

Loggerhead?

Loggerhead?

Too far off the route we used to take, but thanks for the suggestion!

@Mossstitch you'll have to go and find the place again one day like I'm planning to do with this one ❤️

I think that would be the Aberglaslyn pass - I spent many happy hours there as a child splashing in that same river.

I thought that it might be Aberglaslyn too, but last summer we walked along there as far as Beddgelert and it wasn't the same place. The woods are too deciduous and the river too wild!

Thanks both, I think you've identified mine as the river was wild (or seemed to me as a child) with big stones/ boulders in it that you could walk across to a little island/dry bit in the middle. I'll have to take a trip out there 👍

Can report that it wasn't Ty'n y Groes. Beautiful spot, lovely river and very tall conifers but not the same place!

The place I remember was a smaller river and fir trees on both sides, the river really was just running through the woods.
