Panicking. Just found it in my bed. Flatmate and I have managed to get it into the corridor but we have no idea what it is, and I don’t think I’m going to sleep tonight. What the hell is it? It had wings/flew.

It's a bumble bee

ohgodwtfisthis · 18/07/2023 20:34

It’s got no stripes though?

Looks a like bumble bee to me too

Lo89 · 18/07/2023 20:36

Google says all black is a carpenter bee- I've learnt something new haha

ohgodwtfisthis · 18/07/2023 20:37

I’m panicking there’s more where it came from. Flatmate managed to shake it off my pillow but my skin’s crawling.

Looks very bee-shaped, I agree.

Is it black? The other option is a June bug but they’re more brown.

Maybe a sexton beetle?

It's a bee! Probably a furry flower bee. He's harmless, try and put him outside if you can!

Was expecting this thread to be about some kind of stomach bug #fml

Dunnoburt · 18/07/2023 20:38

It's a bee

Bit of an overreaction for a tiny little insect.🙄

To be fair I was already mid panic attack over something else (more significant) and over tired, and got a shock.

Please don't kill him OP, he's a super little pollinator and we need them! He won't hurt you if you pick him up very gently in a paper towel or even a good old fashioned cup and piece of paper.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/07/2023 20:45

It'll have either flown in the window by accident or landed on some laundry and been brought inside.

It won't want to be indoors any more than you want it there, please just let it out a window so it can go home.

djivdfj · 18/07/2023 20:46

Just a wee bee. There won't be any more. Bung him outside, all will be well

Plump82 · 18/07/2023 20:47

Poor things probably exhausted. Try and move him to somewhere with flowers.

ohgodwtfisthis · 18/07/2023 20:47

flatmate’s managed to get him out the kitchen window, no idea how it got in, my window’s been shut all day and we don’t have a front door (block of flats).

I’m trying to look at it from that angle 😂 I just wish it hadn’t popped up out of nowhere on my pillow! I’ve never seen a totally black one before. I’m in central Scotland.

I'm not afraid of bumbles, i have sometimes stroked one gently when it's landed on me and have taught my children how to carefully handle them when the bees are exhausted and not in a safe place. They are one of the calmest bees imo.

Although saying all that...it must have been a great shock to you, especially since it was in your bed. Bees have no respect for boundaries!!
