What can I buy from the high street to block out snoring - holiday emergency

DH and I normally sleep in separate rooms due to his snoring. Sharing a bed n holiday and I've not slept for 2 nights. He's in a foul mood because I was on the sofa last night. I'm not having fun.

Going to a seaside UK town today, wha can I buy on the high street that'll help? Silicone earplugs are not touching the sides.

I am the snorer in our family. When holidays mean we have to share a bedroom, i buy breathright strips that go over the nose which seem to help a lot, and bough DH a soft headphones band, so he could listen to music and block me out. Huge sympathies, i know it’s horrible to listen to but i have no control over it. Sulking because you took measures to get a good night’s sleep isn’t on though.

Beamur · 18/07/2023 08:54

I use the strips if I have to subject anyone to my snoring. Mixed success. Effective at first but my snoring finds a way round them!
I'm going to try use a nasal spray to try and keep my airwaves open (away with friends for a few days soon) but that's only a temporary measure as you can't have prolonged use. Might be worth a try? I am a bit allergic to dust etc which doesn't help so might chuck in an antihistamine too.

Given that he’s in a foul mood because you had to sleep on the sofa because of his snoring, how about a second hotel room for you?

Boots own brand earplugs

EvilElsa · 18/07/2023 09:02

HE is in a foul mood?! How nice of him.
Maybe try a night of poking him awake every 15 minutes to see how he likes it (DH is a snorer and it's torture).
I'd either fork out for another room or continue the sofa sleeping unless you can get some strips or throat spray to try.

Gymmum82 · 18/07/2023 09:04

I’d opt for a separate hotel room since ear plugs aren’t working. Nothing worse than being kept up by snoring

FisherThem · 18/07/2023 09:05

Staying with his parents. No option of a second room! And yes, not impressed at his grump.

I was going to suggest silicone earplugs. Maybe nose strips for him? But honestly it's concerning and bizarre that HE is in a bad mood that you had to sleep on the sofa. Is he usually a dick?

AnonymousAntWorker · 18/07/2023 09:08

Has he bothered getting tested for sleep apnoea and actually getting a CPAP?
I hate my CPAP machine, I don't sleep well with it on but its either that or I'm not safe to drive or look after my high risk patients.
It also means I don't keep my neighbours awake any more with my pneumatic snoring.

BiddyBee · 18/07/2023 09:10

I have this issue too so I really sympathise. When we go away I use earplugs and wear a soft headband with built in speakers over the top of the earplugs. I use an app that has all kinds of sound effects. I usually choose the airplane cabin one or the tumble drier!

I hate it though, as the earplugs hurt my ears and make them itch, and the headband slides around so I have to use hairpins to attach it to my hair. DH sleeps soundly though which is the most important thing 🙄

EvilElsa · 18/07/2023 09:11

If he is pissy because HIS snoring (which has no impact on his nights sleep) and you are staying with his parents I'd be tempted to go home. Being kept awake by snoring is awful and while it's not the snorers fault it is torture. Add on a miserable sulking partner to the snoring and that's NOT a holiday. That's a bloody trial. Hope he apologies and bucks his ideas up OP and that you can find a solution.

finewelshcheese · 18/07/2023 09:11

Why would he be in a foul mood because you slept on the sofa? Send his noisy ass to the sofa tonight, how does that sound?

FWIW nothing on the high street will block out someone snoring next to you in bed. The only method that works for me is using the silicon earplugs (broken in half so they fit in your ear properly) with a musicozy headband over the top playing white noise. Sold on Amazon.

HundredMilesAnHour · 18/07/2023 09:16

You're a better person than me OP. If I'd barely slept for 2 nights AND was having to stay at the inlaws AND he was being an arse because I'd had to sleep on the sofa, I would have gone nuclear by now.

The best solution for snoring is a pillow over the face but I assume you still want him alive?

FisherThem · 18/07/2023 09:20

I like the idea of the headband with white noise. Are there any on he high street? Have had a pillow over my yen head to no avail.

Yes, his attitude sucks. He then complained that I 'slammed the door' when I went to the sofa at 1am and that he was awake for ages. Oh dear.

Its going to be a long day at the seaside in the rain with in laws and toddler.

Sleep upside down so he gets your feet. It's very slightly better

CindersAgain · 18/07/2023 09:21

Wax ones are slightly better at blocking noise. Something like this. Chemists should sell them

Stay on the sofa and make it as comfortable as possible. Tell him to stop being a dick or go home. Buy an eye mask if the light comes in in the morning.

It's a horrible feeling to know your snoring is so bad It's keeping your partner from sleeping, but you don't get to be in a huff about it, it's worse for them.

Pick up a One Man Tent from Go Outdoors on the way and pitch it on the beach for him... 🙂

Tough. He is keeping you awake.

What is he doing to address his snoring?

areyouhavinglaugh · 18/07/2023 09:25

Buy silicone ear plugs from boots
They work brilliantly when you get the hang of putting them in properly. You won't be able to hear anything

manontroppo · 18/07/2023 09:37

My sympathies. Ear plugs do bugger all in my experience as they don't block out the low frequency rumblings.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/07/2023 09:39

He is mad at you? Right.

I'd be going home.

They are great but they won't block out a loud snorer in the bed next to you.

I recommend playing white noise on your phone as well as the earplugs, OP. You can find long tracks on Spotify, possibly apple music too if you use that. YouTube also but...adverts!...
