Decent shop bought Swiss rolls

Lochroy · 17/07/2023 22:59

I think the easiest way for me to muster up the birthday cake DC wants is to use Swiss rolls.

Any suggestions for decent tasting shop bought ones please?

(Please don't tell me to bake, I normally make one to assuage the working mum guilt, but for various reasons this year I really, really don't have time; I'll focus on trying to turn out something he wants and hopefully not a dogs dinner from bought cakes!)

I love the Tesco ones!

What about getting him a Colin the Caterpillar cake from M&S?

Or the imitation version from just about any other supermarket?

I generally don't like shop bought cake but Colin is quite nice.

Yes M&S Swiss roll is nice. Especially the extremely chocolatey one.

M&S are the best, Colin, Connie or even the normal ones

I second the Tesco ones

Waitrose are good - I use them for a baked Alaska and they always taste great - the raspberry one - yum

I need to turn it into a train 🤦‍♀️

I thought of Colin, but he looks a bit more slug like than cylindrical.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will peruse shops for suitably shaped baked goods!

M and S. they are delicious!

Aldi are pretty good!

If it doesn't need to be a 3-D train Waitrose do a round one with a train running around the outside. It's in the food to order bit of
the website.

Thank you, sadly that won't cut it.

Lidl lemon ones are lush

Marks and Spencer are generally very reliable for cakes so I would probably get one from there

User538765 · 18/07/2023 09:07

Coronation Colin was delicious, maybe you could adapt a Colin by eating the face and legs and adding train features instead

Thingsthatgo · 18/07/2023 09:29

I remember a brilliant train my mum made when I was little. Swiss roll with mini roll funnel and wheels, and a Cadbury fingers train track.
I think she used allsorts for some details like windows and maybe even a wisp of candy floss for smoke from the funnel (although she may have used cotton wool!).
She was a brilliant cake maker, but looking back she probably had run out of time that year (5 children!). Still one of my favourites.

Aldi’s specially selected lemon one is lovely.
