I hate my varifocals

SeasonsBleatings · 17/07/2023 11:50

Got them a week ago after wearing glasses for computer work/reading for the last few years. My optician said one eye is struggling slightly with distances and varifocals will help when I'm out and about or watching TV etc. I hate them. I can't really see a difference in my distance vision when I'm out and about and they are an utter pain to read in as even though I paid for a decent size 'reading' window in them it's hard to position my reading in that window and they are useless for computer work.

Should I persevere? I am so tempted to just take them back and get a refund under the Specsaver guarantee.

I love my varifocals which I also got from Specsavers. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to them. It's so much better than taking my glasses on and off all the time.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/07/2023 13:35

I got persuaded to have the 'baby varifocals' I can't see any difference between them and my normal single vision lenses. I so t be bothering again!

hattie43 · 17/07/2023 13:35

I tried them and gave up . I have pairs for reading and separate for driving but although it's a pain constantly changing at least I can see

I really don't like mine - I changed to a contact lens for reading in one eye. I'm only very slightly short sighted so don't bother with a distance one in the other eye.

It's 100% better for computer work and I got used to it very quickly, but when I get tired my brain literally says no I can't manage this any more and I can't read at all and have to swap back to my glasses.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/07/2023 13:37

Take them back and go to Boots. My specsavers varifocals were ridiculous compared to my Boots ones which I love and could wear straight away.

ReviewingTheSituation · 17/07/2023 13:38

Specsavers said it would take me between a week and a month to get used to them. I thought I'd be fine within a week, but it really did take me the full month. It was so disorientating at first - I used to wear distance only glasses, and I found it really weird that I didn't have all-around distance vision through varifocals. BUT - the fact I could use my phone, or read, or sew, whilst watching the TV was a game changer, so I stuck with it. Now they feel totally normal, and I think it would be odd to go back.

Some people do adjust really quickly. But not everyone. I'd give it a few weeks - you're basically asking your brain to make a big adjustment, so it makes sense that it might take time for that to happen.

Sh4rkAttack · 17/07/2023 13:42

I picked up my first pair of varietals from specsavers last week and loved them straight away... but I'm very short sighted and have been struggling for ages, and it was a clear improvement. I can imagine that if I didn't really need distance glasses I might not see the benefit in the same way.

arapunzel · 17/07/2023 13:46

Take them back and ask to see the Dispensing Optician.

Varifocals can take a little bit of time to get used to and most people will get used to them. They may just need an adjustment.

Nowitstarts · 17/07/2023 13:48

I think you need to go back.

My first varifocals were like magic and life changing from day one.

IloveJudgeJudy · 17/07/2023 13:58

I got mine from specsavers and was able to use them immediately. The only problem I had was going down stairs. You have to move your head, not just your eyes. I do have the second best type. Last time I asked about the top tier. Dispenser said that I should stick with what I’m used to. So no hard upsell at all. I do now need computer glasses and my eyes have changed very quickly for that prescription so I need to get a new pair.

I’ve always been very happy with mine.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/07/2023 14:07

Go back to the optician and see what they suggest. I hated my first pair of varifocals, but I have new varifocal glasses and sunglasses and they are miles better. I definitely prefer the sunglasses though, which I think is down to the bigger frame.

SeasonsBleatings · 18/07/2023 07:36

Thanks all, lots of great advice. I went for Ultra Elite so not a cheap option which means the reading vision pane should be quite large.

I got used to mine within a day or two, took DH several weeks

MayonnaiseFly · 18/07/2023 07:40

Same as a previous poster, I had to get mine adjusted, a couple of times actually, it was the manager in SS that eventually got them right, he put a ‘tilt’ or something on them which seems to magically increase the reading window a huge amount. Never looked back. Well worth persevering

Lamelie · 18/07/2023 07:43

AnIntrovert · 17/07/2023 12:11

I am yet to meet anyone who is happy with them. Go back to two pairs.

I love mine! Decent work deal and these cheap suppliers I’ve had six great pairs over 10+ years
Cheap Varificals
@SeasonsBleatings I’d start again. Return your current pair and go Brillen.

brillen.co.uk - The eyewear discounter!

With brillen.co.uk you get a complete pair of varifocals or single vision glasses for only £49 or £9

I have varifocals and they are good for doing normal day to day life incl. driving. But reading, working at the computer - no, they don't work. I have a second pair for it.

It is interesting, I have a fairly small frame and according to my optician that is one of the problems as you need to hold the head constantly in one position to work.
DH who has varifocals for years also works at computers and doesn't have the same issue, larger frame = larger window for the reading part.

bumblingbovine49 · 18/07/2023 08:14

Mine are fine. I've worn them for over 10 years now. I always need a day or two to adjust when I get a new prescription but I don't find them a problem at all. I do need them though as my long distance is a problem and I absolutely can't read without reading glasses . I also need a separate pair for use with screens at work so if varifocals didn't work I'd need to juggle 3 sets of glasses which I just couldn't do

flatpack1 · 18/07/2023 08:19

Im on my 4th or 5th pair of VF. Never been able to read books or see my work PC or home laptop with any of them. I just buy supermarket readers and spend my life swapping

KnickerlessParsons · 18/07/2023 08:37

It took me about 2 months to get used to mine. I hated them at first but persevered and I suddenly realised one day that I was wearing them without thinking of how to hold my head etc.
there are still downsides - eg ground is out of focus, but I prefer them to having to use two pairs.

jannier · 18/07/2023 08:40

I've had the area adjusted before now. It generally takes a week to get used to
I'd consider a work pair for computer desk work.
When I went back to two pairs not being able to read things like labels in shops was annoying.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 18/07/2023 08:44

My husband loves his. I went back to 2 glasses.

wantmorenow · 18/07/2023 08:45

I tried VF and couldn't get on with them. Now have "occupational lenses" for reading, PC and TV. Life changing.

PieonaBarm · 18/07/2023 08:52

SeasonsBleatings · 18/07/2023 07:36

Thanks all, lots of great advice. I went for Ultra Elite so not a cheap option which means the reading vision pane should be quite large.

I got Superdigital and nearly cried at the cost but they've been worth every penny as the reading pane pretty much is the whole width of the lense. I knew I'd struggle with anything else.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 18/07/2023 08:54

Personally I have never cracked varifocals, but I know many who have and I do have successful bifocals. I would take them back and talk to the optician, see if the prescription is right.

Mosaic123 · 18/07/2023 08:59

I have contact lenses where one is for reading and one is for distance. They are fantastic. I have had them for a few years now. I have been wearing contact lenses for almost 50 years though. I started in my early teens.
