7YO DD has had itchy and sore private parts for about a week, but she has fine motor issues and doesn't always wipe well at school so isn't hugely out of the ordinary. However this morning she had scratched so much she'd taken skin off her public area so I've been cleaning and applying sudocrem all day.

However about two hours ago she woke up really uncomfortable again and I've applied her cream and seen what I can only assume are bloody worms!! I am so upset I didn't realise sooner but none of my DCs have had this and I assumed you only had an itchy bottom.

Going to ring GP first thing in the morning but wtaf do I do? She is autistic so cannot know she has them or she will be hysterical. Also she's saying it hurts to wee and I'm really afraid that this means it's quite a severe case? I'm so out of my depth. What do I tell the school??

Handhold/advice would be VERY appreciated.

Thanks all you've really helped calm me down. I think I'm just exhausted. I just feel so guilty because she must have had them for a while and I just kept assuming it was her sensory issues causing an over reaction. I will wait to see how the ovex does, if it helps I won't bother the gp but if it still hurts her to wee again tonight ill take her in the morning. She's completely exhausted so can't go to school.

Threadworms are so common, really don’t beat yourself up.

The ovex works fairly quickly. You can’t take more than one in two weeks though - it’s bad for your liver if you do, I believe, and it can take a few days for them to all die.

Make sure you put all sheets, clothes, stuffed toys, on a hot wash and make sure everyone in the family takes the treatment.

Good luck!

We’ve had them numerous times in this house! (My children bite their nails, so they get them a lot from school!)

I would tell school. It’s standard to notify school round my way. They notify parents that there’s been a case of worms and to check their children if they have symptoms. Same if a child gets nits.

Hope your daughters now feeling better. I read an article that said some people think you should deworm every 6 months that’s how common they are.

Get the Boots own brand version of Ovex - much cheaper. My son had threadworms all the time even though no one else in the family did. It’s not an issue at all.

Something makes me think you read that over 4 weeks ago.

Hope the meds are now kicking in. My DS1 had them regularly as he was a nail biter.
This may be tmi but when the meds work you may see lots of dead worms in the poo. If your DD is likely to be upset by this you might want to offer to help her so she doesn't see them.
At least this does show that the ovex is doing it's thing.
I have two kids in primary school and keep ovex and head lice treatment in stock at home. Small children are generally quite yucky at times.
