Knocked baby teeth

DS(2.5yo) fell over yesterday and knocked a front tooth and the incisor next to it out of position. We called 111, who said to keep an eye on things and to try and get a dentist appointment on Monday. Has anyone been in this situation? Will the injured teeth likely fall out? Will the dentist suggest extracting them to help with the pain (I'm worried about his oral health as there is no way he's letting us brush his teeth at the moment)? How likely is it that the developing adult teeth will have been damaged? He was a ridiculously early teether, so his adult teeth might also be more developed than is usual at his age. What would that damage look like?

I just feel so sorry for him, it looks horrendously purple and bruised. It must be so sore, he's not at all himself at the moment...

My friends little boy knocked his and they just had to leave it till his adult teeth came through unfortunately. Similar age to your child and it took years.

If he doesn't let you brush them then I'm sure the dentist will have something to say about that though? A lot of toddlers fuss and mess during toothbrushing but it can really affect the next set of teeth.

Oh I've just reread this ignore me.
You mean you can't brush now while injured - I had thought you meant you couldn't ever brush them!

Sorry! It's late and my mental faculties seem to have failed me in reading

My son broke his so it was a bit different. The two front teeth were removed and his adult teeth came in normally at the usual time.

Oh no, poor kid! I'm assuming extraction at this age is in hospital under GA? Really hope we can avoid that but if it helps with the pain then needs must!

Ha, not to worry! Yeah, he does the normal toddler drama about having his teeth brushed, which we just ignore, but yesterday he looked genuinely scared and upset when I held out his tooth brush. I'll ask the dentist about it tomorrow...

Yes under GA. They are under for a couple of minutes. It’s over very quickly.

My boy did this when he was only 1.5, he'd just teethed these really big front teeth, lots of sleepless nights to get them!
They chipped off halfway, then he knocked them twice again and went grey, then gradually wore down to tiny stubs. Due to covid his op to have them removed was delayed and I do think he had pain from them.
I was so gutted at first as knew his smile would be ruined for years as he chipped them so young, or will have difficulty eating, he's 6 now and still toothless. BUT... I quickly got used to it and it's made him look so cute, he has a sweet lisp, I wouldn't have him any other way!
The op under general was fine, the sooner the better as think they do hurt.

DS2 aged 3 fell face first on a tiled floor and badly bashed his front teeth. They stayed intact but went grey and stayed so for several years until they fell out.
Adult teeth undamaged.

cooldarkroom · 17/07/2023 10:16

If they are badly misaligned, one or both may be removed,
My Dd dentist said it was so the 2nd tooth would grow back straight
This was a long time ago, so may not be current practice

WavyOne · 17/07/2023 10:35

Mine fell onto tiled floor when he was 3/4 years old and knocked the front 2 back up into his gums 😭😭. There was so much blood, a&e didnt deal with dental so we had to just go home. They came back down and were really wobbly for a few weeks but cemented themselves back in, no discolouration then they fell out when he was 5 anyway!

Wibblewobbletooth · 17/07/2023 13:54

Thanks everyone! I took him to the dentist this morning and the teeth are loose. She said they'll firm up again but that they might go grey if the nerves are damaged and could come out slightly earlier (he was such an early teether it wouldn't surprise me if that was next week!). He won't have damaged his adult teeth because the baby teeth were knocked backwards, not upwards.

Poor kid screamed so hard he forgot to breathe! Eating and drinking normally again now fortunately!

Hi. I know this is an over a year ago but I'm in the same situation now 😔. Did your DSs teeth stay put ?

DS knocked his backwards and dentist says they'll likely fall out. He's only just turned 2 🥲

Oh no, sorry to hear your little one has done the same! Yes, DS still has his teeth! I think they firmed up in a slightly different position but he also still has a dummy (FML) so might be that. In certain lighting it looks slightly discoloured, but nothing noticeable!

If you've already been to the dentist my only other advice would be to keep him properly topped up on pain relief. Bear in mind though that if he's not eating the ibuprofen especially might make him vomit (that was fun... 111 "Just keep an eye out for signs of a head injury, like vomiting". Child <spews entire stomach contents out>)

@Wibblewobbletooth thank you for your reply. Soooo glad to hear your LOs teeth stayed put! I hope the same for my DS. It's such a worry. I've accepted the fact that the teeth have been moved out of their original position.. I just hope he gets to keep them xx

My daughter did this when she was around 3 years old, her tooth fell out. We are never actually sure what she did properly except she did hit her mouth many months before. It’s the only thing we could relate it to. When it did fall out it was an awful feeling and I felt really sad but except for the odd child sometimes asking why she had no tooth no one batted an eyelid, least of all her. It took three years of waiting but finally her adult tooth has come through and looks completely fine, she may have to have braces but I think she would have regardless as her bottoms ones are a bit wonky. It was so nice to see a tooth there again and sometimes a bit odd as we’ve been used to seeing her without for so long. I wouldn’t worry to much, I’m sure they will be fine and if they do fallout it’s just a case of waiting.

How long after the bump did they fall out?

DD knocked a tooth out when she was 3. Now 6 and a half and still got a gap. Dentist has checked at her regular check-ups and said no concerns. I can't imagine her with two front teeth now!
