Cafietere Coffee

OK so boring thread of the day but...

I just bought a 600ml cafietere. And I cant for the life of me get the coffee ratio right. The coffee I bought doesn't say & I've tried various combinations from Google but I'm.struggling to get anything drinkable.

Can someone help with the correct amount to make the perfect (or at least drinkable) coffee

1 rounded dessert spoon of coffee per person plus 250ml water per person.
Stir, wait 3-5 minutes and plunge.

@@AppleCinnamonBagel Thank you. I'll try that

May I add that I've found a much better taste by buying whole beans and grinding them at home (inexpensive grinders on Amazon that take 5 seconds). For me the coffee tastes fresher.

I also tend to put only about 150ml of water per person as I then add milk when it's ready.

7g of coffee per 125ml cup is the usual measurement for cafetieres. This gives you a nice Americano to add milk to. Some people like it twice as strong though.

That would be two and a bit to 600ml water and very weak. I'd go with the amounts @ManyATrueWord has given and if you prefer stronger coffee you can add more.

@WeAreTheHeroes um a rounded dessert spoon is approx 14g which happens to be twice what @ManyATrueWord recommended (7g) and twice the amount of water (125 ml) so it's the same ratio...

Agree with this. I felt v poncey at first, grinding my own beans 😆 But the coffee tastes much better.

I put 4 heaped dessert spoons of ground coffee in ours, which is one litre when completely full. And we like it fairly strong.

ManyATrueWord · 17/07/2023 09:31

My ancient scoop for 7g coffee is actually a 15ml scoop. Which is a level tablespoon. Which is the same as a rounded dessert spoon.

One scoop per cup if you like Americano with a bit of milk. Two scoops if you like espresso based drinks with hot milk.

iholdgrudges · 17/07/2023 09:31

Give up and buy a Moka pot, you won't regret it.

Radiat · 17/07/2023 09:32

I don’t usually measure, but out of curiosity I did this morning. I do Italian beans of about 4 strength, two heaped tablespoons to a 300ml (or 330, possibly) cafetière. Dash of milk in at the end.

Radiat · 17/07/2023 09:33

Ugh, I meant desert spoons. Imagine the buzz though.

mindutopia · 17/07/2023 09:52

I have truly never measured coffee into the cafetiere, but I'd say I add about an inch of coffee in the bottom, slightly less if one of the one cup ones, and then fill up to nearly full (room for the plunger and lid at the top). Could it be your coffee is rubbish? Or you need to use fresh water? I can't say I've ever made a bad cup of coffee in a cafetiere just eyeballing it, unless the coffee is bad or the water is not right.

I went for 2 x 15ml scoops & around 500ml water
