longest battery life - is this a record?

I am still using the calculator my father bought for my O levels - if not daily, then certainly weekly. No battery change - in fact, I am not sure if the battery is even changeable, I can't see a battery compartment that can be opened.

just over 40 years now.

Is this a record? Does anyone have a battery that has lasted longer?

Ooh, nothing that can compete with that!

Chasingsquirrels · 16/07/2023 09:53

And not one of the little solar panel ones?

no solar panel, no. Did solar powered calculators exist in the 1980s?

Hate to tell you... it's got a little solar panel? Four or five little shiny squares somewhere near the screen?

YukoandHiro · 16/07/2023 09:54

Yes they did exist in the 80s

Definitely.
I'm 51 and had solar ones doing my GCSEs and Alevels.

Similar to this, although would have been a scientific one.

its like that, not exactly the same- I cant see a removeable battery cover on mine, unless I unscrew the whole back, maybe, but I am not going to do that

I still sometimes use my 1976 scientific calculator - a Casio fx-19 this model. I like the green display - most other calculators of the era had red display.
The batteries last forever. I keep it in the kitchen junk drawer, and it is mostly used to convert g to ounces when cooking. Can't say I use the log function these days, but when I got it it effectively replaced log tables.
