Can I become a teacher with a law degree?

I got a 1st class law degree in in 2009. Since then I’ve got an LPC & worked in the legal field (though not as a qualified lawyer) ever since. A levels in Law (A), media (A), English language (A), History (B).

Now considering moving into teaching. My ideal subject would be history but English might be more realistic given my experience?

I’m at the very beginning of researching this but would love to hear your thoughts, advice & experiences. Thanks!

Yes - I did Law and worked as a solicitor for some years before retraining and doing a PGCE in MFL and I've been teaching ever since. Also taught A-Level law too.

I’d be super interested in this. Is it possible to do a PGCE in English then do A level law also?

No idea how she got there, but DSs history teacher has a Law degree. She is an awesome teacher.

I think the Law teacher at my school is an English teacher.

There isn't enough Law timetabled to be a full time Law teacher so you'd have to teach other subjects.

Yes, absolutely. You don't even need to be a qualified teacher to teach in academies (which is the majority of schools now I should think) and private schools.

Whilst true, I wouldn't recommend it as you will likely be on the unqualified pay scale which is a pittance.

You can try secondary. The profession is crying out for new staff. We’ve had a PGCE English student who had a law degree. Get all the experience you can so you know what you’re signing up for. I love teaching but my word there are souls destroying aspects.

Yes DH has just done exactly that. Left the legal profession as he hated it did 1 year PGCE and starts a job teaching English at an FE college in September, he might teach a bit of law part time as well.

He's going to do QTLS alongside teaching next academic year so he can teach in secondary if he wants to.
