What day would you have for a National Day in the UK?

There's July 4th for the USA
July 14th for France.

A day off, fireworks, parties and something that brings a community together.

We have Bonfire Night - but I suspect that isn't all that unifying.
We have the different countries of the UK - which could also complicate if the wrong day is chosen.

It just seems nice to have a day for the country like some (quite a lot?) of other countries have.

I vote for St Patrick's Day!

Already a very popular day in the UK as a whole anyway.

And St Patrick himself was from Great Britain as he states in his Confessions. To this day, nobody knows where Bannavem Taburniae was situated - anywhere along the west coast of Great Britain between the Severn up to Strathclyde!

Patrick's colour was historically blue, so could use that and the Republic of Ireland could continue to use the green which was popular following the failed 1798 Rebellion.

Above all, it would demonstrate to all how far the relationship between the UK as a whole and the Republic of Ireland has advanced since.

Just a thought.

Celebrating the beginning of spring / international workers solidarity on May Day (according to preference) sounds good.

The idea of a new Bank Holiday to celebrate the UK - sorry OP but I cringe so much just thinking about it! Just imagine the smug politicians lecturing us about our wonderful values of tolerance (while whipping up hysteria about refugees and trying to deport them to Rwanda).

Our country has a history of rapacious colonialism, then a brief period of being sensible, then the stupid tantrum/act of national self-harm that was Brexit. Currently our public services are almost collapsing from under-funding and it’s frightening.

There are some lovely things about this country too, but I think they are much better celebrated with quiet enjoyment (a country walk, a pint in a nice pub, amateur choral singing, banter among mates, favourite author/TV/films, community projects) than with jingoistic flag-waving.

Mentioning flag-waving made me realise. We already have a day where everyone - well, not everyone, but a decent number of people - go all patriotic and start flag-waving. Last Night of the Proms.

So we could just have that as our national day.

National Freddo day, one day a year where the current price of Freddos is announced by the printer minister in the morning news, people have street parties with Freddo themed cakes and treats and discuss the price of Freddos as an indicator of the national economy and inflation.
You could have history of the Freddo events a la Linda Snell's history of the Ambridge fête, whack a frog, a tombola with tenuously Freddo themed prizes and a new froggy flag that no one has commandeered for extreme political positions and everyone would sing Paul McCartney's frog song/we all stand together in a rousing national chorus.

National days tend to be celebrating something e g independence or revolution, neither of which have happened here. It would be difficult to create one without it commemorating something significant.

We have a lot of pageantry and flag waving around the royals. In the past year, there's been the jubilee, the funeral & the coronation so I suppose that's our way of doing it.

Surely this is Amazon prime day now. BUY ALL THE THINGS

Yes, Black Friday. Instead of going to work, people get to concentrate on shopping for bargains.

But there should also be a retail workers holiday day. A day when all the shops are closed and people who work in them, along with warehouse and delivery workers get a paid day off. Maybe some time in early January?
