How does one join politics in the U.K.?

I am foreign. Just curious as to how? What is the pathway? Do politicians donate money to their chosen parties and then are given a seat to contest from? Do different political parties have different paths in becoming a party leader/ member? Sorry if this is something I should know already but I don’t and am trying to be more informed now. Or if there are any articles online which state facts and someone could point me to, that would be equally helpful! Thank you all.

It's a career. Not too different from any other really, except that instead of a final interview, you have to win an election. Just look at the career history of any politician you pick.

Typically politicians started out by getting involved in the local branch of their chosen party, or a university society, campaigning and so on, often on a volunteer basis. If at university, aspiring politicians often do formal debate, like Oxford Union kind of stuff, too.

Make a name for yourself and you might be selected as a candidate for a local election. Candidate selection processes do vary between different parties. Win that election and you now have a job as a politician.

Some people come in other routes of course. Boris Johnson was a political writer before he was selected as the Tory candidate for Henley, becoming elected as an MP.

Buying your way in isn't really a thing in Britain. Yes you have to join the party but membership is like 5 pounds a month. The wealthy use their money to influence politicians, not to become MPs themselves.
