Any civil servants about?

Hi,
I'm just wondering how the onboarding process works for the civil service. I received an offer back in Feb but couldn't start until August.
Will someone contact me soon to discuss my first day? The job is hybrid, mostly at home, so should I expect some kind of equipment to be delivered or do I need my own?
I know I could email and ask but I'm trying to play it cool and I know they're busy so don't want to bother them when they might be planning on contacting me the week before or something!

Civil service is notoriously rubbish at onboarding!

In my department your line manager will contact you a few weeks before your start date. You're required to use the equipment provided, but they won't provide it in advance and the first week is pretty much sorting that out.

Have you heard from HR and signed everything that needs signed? I'd contact HR as the starting point if you've not heard anything 2 weeks before.

Thanks @Merrow! Yeah I've had all checks and signed documents, is verification etc etc. Just waiting for the first day is weird! Moving from a completely different sector where you're expected to work for free for a few weeks in advance to 'get familiar' with everything so this is a total change!

Depends on the department and manager. When I do onboarding I like to have a chat with the person before they start so they know where to be on their first day. Must have reminded the new started half a million times to remember her ID as she would not be allowed into the building 😅

my dept has an Onboarding guide for managers which works well if the manager follows it.

generally laptop will arrive week or 2 before start date. You will receive an email telling you what to do on your first day, but may not be until a day or two before.

I had a new staff member start 6 weeks ago and emailed them a few weeks in advance to introduce myself and try to answer any questions re what to expect etc.

Day 1 is always an induction for the full day for all new staff, going though expectations, conduct etc. the rest of the week is setting up new IT, logging into various systems etc, some mandatory e-learning, introduction to your team and work ….. it’s actually really time consuming 🤔but necessary grounding.

Depending on how many of you start at once dictates how the training is structured, how long it takes.

hope this helps
