Arthritis - can anyone recommend a lightweight vacuum cleaner that works really well?

Sorry - this is so dull. I have arthritis. I use a corded Dyson which does the job really well but it very heavy and I struggle with it. I also have a cordless Vax which is fine to use - but it doesn't really pick stuff up very well. Any recommendations for a light, kick-ass vacuum cleaner that is easy to use and will pick up cat hair?

I've literally yesterday bought a cordless shark partly for this reason.

The handheld bit is very light, but the floor head is where all the weight is, but then I use that I just pushing it round the floor anyway anyway don't need that bit to be super lightweight.

All the bits push together well and there is a 5yr warranty. I have very long hair and 2 indoor cats. 1 day in it's fine...

Do you want corded or cordless? I specifically wanted a cordless, as I'm clumsy and my cats love the stairs.

But a corded one is probably lighter.

Thank you @TheSpottedZebra that's really helpful! I need to think about corded or cordless - I found myself getting very irritated dragging the Dyson round this morning.

Or... a robot hoover? My cats wouldn't cope with one, but maybe yours is a brave soldier?

I have a shark corded and its really light, it comes apart so you can do the stairs with just the brush head so I find it not as painful on my shoulders.

I also have a eufy (11max I think) it's not one of the all singing and dancing ones as that meant it had the most suction.

If I use the eufy everyday downstairs I really barely need to use the shark, I'll just use a dustpan and brush for any small spillage in the kitchen.

I eufy upstairs once a week and that's enough too.

Then try and do a whole house with the shark once a month inc stairs. I am one of those people who can't settle if the house is messy AND I have dark carpet in the living room and it works really well.

I have extensive arthritis and I have 2 cordless Sharks - 1 for downstairs and 1 for upstairs.
Incredibly good for both hard floors and carpets.
Would never go back to a Dyson.

Bluevelvetsofa · 12/07/2023 15:42

We have a cordless Beko, which I use downstairs and prefer to the older cordless Dyson, which is upstairs. It has plenty of attachments and an extendable hose and headlights so you can see in the corners.

A Miele C3. The only weight is in the cylinder (which is of course on the ground) so it's super lightweight and a beast versus pet hair! Personally I'd never have another Shark, the cloggiest, messiest vacuum cleaner ever, with a dust constainer the size of a thimble Grin Plus I'm never going to wash another filthy filter as long as I live.

I’ve got extensive arthritis and we have a cordless shark for me to use when DH can’t do it. I bought DS2 and DDIL a cordless Dyson, at their request, but they don’t like it because they said it blocks all the time from her long hair.

Hazelnuttella · 12/07/2023 15:46

We have a cordless Miele. I’m not sure it’s super lightweight.

However I do recommend a cordless in general because it’s psychologically easier to get it out and just do a short burst/ one room.

I feel like with a corded by the time you’ve got it out you feel like you have to do the whole house to make it worthwhile, which may be too much for you.

I have very poor mobility, bad arthritis, and a long haired service dog! After extensive and expensive research (aka buying stuff that doesn't fit the bill) I have fallen in love with the AEG cordless pet https://www.aeg.co.uk/vacuums-home-comfort/vacuum-cleaners/cordless-vacuum-cleaners/cordless-sticks/qx6-anim/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwnrmlBhDHARIsADJ5b_n2rDZLna74pAmzBTlDYXPT-wlAsztmfPuYCQcaFO1_B6m9ogKkK3oaAnYjEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds It's on sale right now and if you sign up for emails you get an extra 10% off. It is so very "German" - ultra efficient, robust, and it is sooooo light. But it get every stray bit of dirt and hair off the floor or the furniture. It also does a decent period of time without recharging, and there isn't any loss of power as the battery level runs down.

I would marry it if I could.....

Thank you everyone. I've just sold one of my kidneys and bought a Shark. I hope it makes tea and empties the dishwasher - it should do for the price.

I'm looking to replace my Shark. The thing that's always annoyed me is how my (long) hair gets wrapped around the roller-brush and then all the crumbs and bits fall out. I then have to upend it and cut all the hair put before I can get going again.

What's your experience woth this one* *(assuming you don't have short hair!)? I'm very tempted.

I hated my Shark for exactly this reason. Never mind my hair - you haven't met the bloody dog! 😂As my mother used to say, "you could knit another dog" out of the hair he sheds! And yes long! But to answer, this one is by far the best I have ever had. And I have had Shark, Miele, the lot. I am not going to say never, but rarely ever do I need to clear the roller brush. And although if you do you need to upend it, it is so light and easy to get at that it's not a trouble. The vacuum actually is 2 in 1 so the "handheld" bit slips out at the press of a button (and this is also how you empty the detritus) leaving just the body of the tall vacuum, which is very light indeed without the battery etc. The handheld section also has it's own roller section that you can slot on so does stairs, furniture, and even smaller spaces really well.

JacquelinePot · 13/07/2023 08:08

Amazing, thank you@Quveas. I'm sold!

Oh just seen this, had to come on and second the recommendation. We have one and it is fabulous. Ours has a hair chopper button to clean the brush. I do find the hand held part a bit heavy to reach up high, but we wheel out the ancient Sebo and attachments to do edges, upholstery, etc. We have a Roomba too, but the AEG is so handy for a quick whizz round. So many vacuum cleaners!
