Contact lenses at home

Hi wondering if anyone has ordered prescription contact lenses to do at home? I had an appointment yesterday at specsavers for contacts I had to remove them twice and insert before I can take them home. I got the left eye out ok after a few attempts my right eye was more tricky trying to find a comfortable position etc. Due to this my eye got a little irritated and was watering alot so the lady said to come back another day but it's 6wks away. I feel like if she said give your eye a little break then try again would be ok but I felt like after 5mins she basically just gave up on helping me learn. So am wondering has anyone had the same and just ordered contacts themselves as I have my prescription etc wrote down

I would advise caution I have had an allergic reaction to a brand of contact lenses in the past.
Also you have your prescription but is it your glasses one? That is not the same as your contact lenses one and lenses come in different sizes and things do you have all that written down?
If you don't want to wait ring around other opticians and see if they can do a trial any sooner but I don't think you have enough information to order contacts.
And if you do get them in and can't get one out what do you do?

I’ve used vision direct and feel good contacts and happy with both of them.

Watch some YouTube videos or something of people putting lenses in because there’s different ways and different ones will work better for different people. My optician went through a few different ways to do it until I was confident and since I learnt the right way for me I’ve had no issues and I’ve been wearing them decades now.

I've been using DaySoft for about 15 years and never had any problems.

I've been wearing contacts daily for years, I use Vision Direct, no problem at all.

I've used DaySoft for years and have no problems. Their customer service is very good.

Specsavers will always try to upsell you and try to scare you off using anything other than their lenses, in my experience.

Why is the follow appointment 6 weeks away? I would ring up and complain and see if you can get an appointment sooner. If you’re just starting our it’s best to have the support. Don’t take risk with your eyes, get professional support for at least the first year. Go to another optician if they don’t give you an appointment sooner. I’ve been with Specsavers for years. Yes prob paying more than online but I just like the fact that if anything goes wrong with my eyes I can walk in and get support, I get regular contact checks included (plus makes me go in time otherwise they won’t send your lenses). Once, I travelled 200 miles away for a wedding and forgot my contacts. I walked into the local Specsavers and they gave me a spare pair because I was a customer.

Many of the contact lenses by post suppliers will send you a free or very cheap trial pack of 5. If you get a couple of these you could use them just to practice putting them in and out. You wouldn't be wearing them for long so getting exactly the right ones wouldn't matter so much.

I use various one day disposables for my swimming session every morning and I find that each brand feels slightly different in my eyes and has its own best way of removal. The tip that works for all of them, though, is to make sure they're not too dry before you try to get them out. If you're having problems, put a drop of lubricant in your eye and wait 15 minutes.

I always found the official instructions for removing lenses unnecessarily complicated. I just pinch the lens (without touching my eyeball) and pull it out. Keep your nails short and wash your hands before touching your lenses. I've been wearing lenses for over 30 years now.

ladyvivienne · 12/07/2023 11:27

Agree with CosyCoffee. Just literally squish the lens, grab it, off your eyeball. Nails must be short! Thumb and first finger as if you were pinching a piece of paper.

I've worn lenses for 35 years. Even I can't slide the lens off my eye - bloody hurts!

Lenstore are great - you need your contact lens prescription from Specsavers (usually about +25 down on your normal prescription) as they won't take a glasses prescription.
